Do you know how many gallons it leaves? A few gallons? Would be nice to know if you can go an extra 60 miles or so when on the highway and there isn't a gas station nearby and you are near the "0 to empty" indication.

I know its at least 50 more miles. Idk what the exact target is, but I'm sure it again depends on the drivers driving patterns/mpg/etc

Still has nothing to do with the issue the OP has. He can't put more than 26 gallons in a 36 gallon tank, most likely because the fuel gauge is incorrect. Regardless of how many miles driven @ so many MPG, if the gauge reads empty when there is 10 gallons in the tank, the issue is with the gauge, not DTE readings, or hoe many MPG he gets.

OP please take it in and have it checked and let us know if its the programming or sending unit.

Seems like a big difference to me. How many miles to empty when full? Not that it's exact, but there's a big different between 500-ish and 700-ish. About 10 gallons worth!

The DTE is based on the number of gallons programmed between empty and full. Since the OP has not has his fuel gauge read full, it estimates the fuel in the tank as being 26 gallons instead of 36 gallons. He stated it shows roughly 3/4 full when it's topped off.

There's a few things that are wrong in this thread, or improperly communicated...

The DTE is based off a pre-programmed variable in the IPC and incrementally adjusted based of calculated MPGs. If the OP had the wrong IPC or wrong value in the IPC, the gauge would be correct regardless, but the DTE would be very incorrect.

If the wrong tank was installed, it wouldn't matter because they only make a 23 and a 36, so that doesn't match up with his symptoms.

If the 23 gal sending unit/pump (Same unit) was installed in a 36 gallon tank, i think you would have bigger issues because it wouldn't even touch the bottom of the 36 gallon tank. I think that case would be highly improbable.

Based on the symptoms, and what was already suggested, it seems like there's a problem with the tank vent or the carbon canister. If the pump stopped, and you let it rest for a bit, you might be able to continue filling it up more. Or also as was suggested, fill more slowly.

These facts are based on the 23 to 36 gallon swap I just did in my truck. After my swap, I put exactly 1 gallon of gas in the tank, and drove to the service station to fill up. The pump stopped three times during my complete fill up. Probably because the tank was so empty and cause the pump i was using was a beast. It filled it pretty quickly. Probably got splash back or an air pocket.

How can a fuel guage prevent fuel from being put in a tank?

It won't, however, it could signal that the tank is empty when it isn't.

Because you can't squeeze more fuel into a container if it is already full. If like the OP thinks, there is still 10 gallons in the tank, and the tank holds a total of 36 gallons, then 26 is all it will hold. This is all based on the assumption that the fuel gauge is wrong, the tank actually is a 36 gallon tank, and there is no blockage.

Not buying into a vapor lock issue at this time with this one mainly because it is too consistent with adding 26 gallons each time. A vapor lock issue would vary too much, and 10 gallons is quite a bit of fuel too, as in 1/3rd of the tank.

Now if the OP comes back and says that it varies a lot in how much fuel is added, gets hissing when removing the nozzle and some splash back, then I can agree on vapor lock, but until then it sounds more like a programming or sending unit issue.

Interesting article I found while looking for tank specs. Down in the comments is a diagram of the two tanks.

put a 5 gallon jug in the back and run till it stops, then you find out how many gallons it takes, but it sounds like a programming issue
