Default 3.5 Startup Exhaust - Is it normal?

Hi All,

I recently picked up my 2016 F150 Lariat with the 3.5L Ecoboost. I love the truck, now if I could just keep it out of sport mode. I have a question for the group. I have been a backyard mechanic for many years but have never owned anything with a turbocharger.

When I start the vehicle, it starts, idles and several seconds later it kind of winds up. This is followed by large increase of exhaust.

Is this something to do with the turbos spinning up? Also noticed what appears to be a slight bluish tint to the tail end of that, as well as black soot at the crevice where the chrome exhaust tip is attached. It would seem like perhaps burning oil.

I know the turbo changes things so I wanted to ask here before I go to the dealer, just in case its not normal. That way if they tell me its normal, I can question them.

Thanks for any input.

The turbos spin up upon cold start to warm up quicker and increase longevity and less stress when accelerating in the cold. The large amount of steam you see come out of the exhaust is a direct result of the turbos spinning up.

The black soot is a characteristic of direct injection engines. It's normal, don't worry about it.
