Default 3.15/3.31 Gear with 3.5L EB - Why Not More Popular?

So both the 3.15 and 3.31 gears tow about a 1000 lbs more than last year's 3.55, at least as much as any RAM 1500, and about equal to th 5.0L with the 3.73 tow gear. My question is, why aren't more people ordering one of these gears? Your payload is obviously going to be your limiting factor, not your towing capacity. I see 3.55 being touted from posts years ago. If the towing capacity of the base gear keeps rising in new model years will you guys still just keep orderng the 3.55? Don't you care about getting better gas mileage? What would the tow rating have to be for you to switch? 10,700 pounds not enough?

Pretty quick too.

I ordered my Plat w/ a 3.55 to be a little quicker off the line. I may not be the norm, but the towing capacity of this truck far exceeds my needs. In fact, I only have the standard hitch which I believe is only rated to 5000 lbs., which is plenty for my weekend warrior stuff.

By the way... the 3.5L EB with a 3.55 rear end is definitely punchy. My friends cannot believe it is only a V6 when I step on it. I'll be getting this truck chipped soon, but currently in sport mode, this thing rocks. FWIW, I am VERY happy with this 3.5L EB/3.55 rear end combo. Cheers.

The 3:55 ratio is the best compromise between the two extremes.

I would rather use gearing to get a load moving instead of throttle.

3.55 is now MAX TOW. It is the upper gear now.

ME TOO. The base gears now exceed the capabilities of the 3.55 of past years. So if you were happy then with the capability of the 3.55 then you should be at least as happy with the capability of the base gears now.

Would you pick last year's 3.55 over this year's 3.15? Statistically, it doesn't make sense that you would.

Simple physics, I prefer "mechanical advantage" of a 3.55.

Good thing as it turns out - MPT tells me the 3.55's help the turbos spool. And I don't tow heavy.

I don't fixate on mileage - it's a truck.

I think more people have the 3.31's than you think. I do, because I don't tow anything...and I didn't want to wait to order something. The way the truck is set up right now with the Bedrug and the Bakflip...the bed is a big trunk. 85% of the time that is what it is. There are a lot of people out there that are a lot like me...we like the ride height and ability to tow/haul stuff...but don't necessarily use it every day. 3.31's are great for what I need.
