23 to 36 Gallon Fuel Tank Conversion

I've decided this upgrade approach is a non-starter on a new truck. My dealer said the change was "basically impossible" which probably means they didn't even look into it.
I don't need anything like this complicating a transaction. I'll just find what I want via search or wait and build in the 2016 model year.

As for complicating the transaction, just have them write the tank swap into the deal, not complicated.

The last dealer I spoke to about tanks (because seemingly all their trucks had 23 gallon tanks) said $1000 plus labor. If I found the right truck except for the tank, I'd probably pull the trigger. One of the other local dealers has a Max Tow with a 23 gallon tank. I cannot even fathom towing heavy with that size tank (yes, I know, at 10mpg, thats still 200 miles and with a wife and kids in the truck it is not likely that I can go more than 3 hours without stopping anyway but still).
What hurts right now is that there are a few Lariats in my area with internet prices $7k under sticker before the rebates. They aren't dealer demos either. That makes this fuel tank effectively a lot more than the $395 factory price.

I have a 2015 F150 Platinum SCSB FX4, came with the 23 gallon. I had local dealer swap out for the 36 gallon. Out the door price $1500 (got two quotes, both about the same). I drive in mostly city driving, so the extra fuel is helpful. The fuel level gauge reset's automatically with the parts that are swapped out (several different parts and longer wires, tubes etc are needed) , the DTE however continues to calculate based on the old 23 gallon. Both local dealer nor Ford Cust. Support knows how to make the DTE calculate for the 36 gallon. I'm awaiting a contact from Cust. Supp, local dealer or FordService here in the forum to follow-up with me to resolve this since you can get it factory optioned to 36. So moral of the story, it's cheaper to order it with 36 or buy one that has it. It definitely won't hurt anything.

I just completed a tank upgrade today on a 2015 F150 Platinum 5.0 as the 23 gallon tank was very annoying. Same issue here with the DTE. Started at around 365 DTE on full tank then drops ever so slowly. I hope someone at Ford can figure this out to tell the dealers what to do to fix it.

I battled this when shopping for my '15 XLT SCrew. None of the dealers could get their hands on one with the 36 gal tank. How it was explained to me was that only about 1 out of 100 had the 36 gal tank added without a special request. Being as though I didn't have 6-8 weeks to wait for a new truck, I went with the smaller tank. I'm hoping that I don't kick myself for doing this. I had the 65 gal midship Titan tank on my '11 Super Duty 6.7L and I really loved getting 900-1000 miles out of a tank @19 mpg. It was a super easy install on the Super Duty even though it knocked a $1700 hole in my wallet! Good thing is that the new truck has the 2.7L and I've been seeing 350-450 miles per tank depending on how I'm driving. I look forward to someone coming thru for all of us and getting this done/doing it themselves and reporting their results to the rest of us!

when you can drive for 10+ hours on a tank with the 36 gallon tank it is peace of mind especially if you find yourself in a natural disaster area or blizzard when getting gas may be a problem. I could probably idle for 24 hours if needed just with one tank. My last truck I carried two 5 gallon cans all winter so I knew I could always get home no matter what. Ant and the grasshopper story I guess. You may not always need 36 gallons but when you do you really need it. I think I read in the manual that if you have the push start button instead of the key your truck will only idle for 30 minutes. With a key ignition it will run til you run out of fuel.

I just looked on line at TASCA Ford Parts, and this is what I found that says it is specific to extended range with a different part numbber. For the 3.5L Eco.
Tank: FL3Z-9002-C $510
Shield: FL3Z-9A032-C $70
Fuel pump/sender: FL3Z-9H307-F
Skid Plate: FL3Z-9A147-C
I do not know what is the difference in the pump, put it has 2 listed, with and without the extended range. I think the skid plates are for the FX4 package, so you can do or to do.
Total is $750. I estimated the shipping to MI at $100.

If you find a truck you like, before you sign the deal your in a good position to negotiate a fuel tank swap out. That way sales dept will work with parts and service to make it happen at a reasonable price. Just a thought.
My dealer service department routinely swaps out tiny standard fuel tanks on Super Dutys, I think they said 50 gallons for $1800.00.

I just looked up the same parts on White Bear Lake Ford Parts, and it came out to $715 plus $88 shipping.
