I wonder if all 5.0 and 3.5 does that rattle ? Maybe owner just can’t hear it while on Drive considering that some rattle are more faint than others. If the noise is supposedly not related to failed parts, all engine should be built the same way, hence produce that noise under similar conditions.

I can tell you that while my 2018 3.5 was in the shop for like a month last year for coolant issues, I had three different 2018 5.0s as loaners. Two out of three rattled pretty loud when you let of the throttle. I now I have a 2019 3.5. It doesn't rattle yet....2000 miles. My buddy has a 2019 3.5 as well with like 3k miles and his does the rattle when you let off the throttle. So...a lot of them do it, that's all I know.

Ford isn't going to fix this until the next generation of 3.5 comes out. My truck is so bad it causes a horrible valvetrain clatter now until it warms up. I can't drive it until it warms up 10 min.......15min in the winter. It's still progressing worse after 2 years.

OP I'm sorry you are finding this out now. There should be some sort of mandatory warning.

I'm pretty convinced that the majority of 3.5's do it, or at least will do it soon, and to varying degrees IE some more noticeable than others. A common trend seems to be right around the first oil change is when it is first noticed. For me it was 2000km after the first oil change, it could have happened sooner but I never did the cold engine-foot on the brake-tap the gas check until I noticed the louder noise of what I assume is the timing chain on cold starts.

Ouch, that doesn't sound good. The dealership has seen this issue on yours and claims its normal?

This is pretty disheartening, I mean Ford has had cam phaser issues going back to the 5.4L. Almost 20 years now and they still can't figure it out and most importantly still deny there's an issue.

I think the decel/off throttle rattle is perfectly normal. My Blackstone analysis comes back all normal too.

Here's the Ford VCT solenoid cleaning patent...

https://patents.google.com/patent/US8136616

It detects and cleans the control valves if necessary. Hence not every one will here the noise and not all noise is the same loudness as there are four control valves and they are probably (guessing here) cleaned independently. Stop worrying and just enjoy your truck.

I would love to have this explanation confirmed somehow by Ford. Even if the explanation makes a lot of sense to me, I have not heard a single voice reporting this vct valve cleaning process has been explained by a Ford dealer or Ford representative.

Species8472 you brought a lot to this topic so far and please continue to so, your theory makes me feel better about my truck

Well if you work for Ford, now is the time to reveal it

You will not hear an official explanation from Ford. Trust me.
