2018 V8 10 speed driving impression
I currently drive a 2016 FX4 Lariat 3.5 ecoboost, and its in the shop for a few issues that have cropped up in the last few months. All I can say is I much rather the way the V8 powerband feels, especially with the 10 speed. I never was a fan of the ecoboost powerband, that feeling is probably exaggerated since I traded in a supercharged silverado for the F150. I've only driven it a few hours, but so far driving in town is effortless, doesn't require as much pedal to keep up with traffic, and the V8 sounds fantastic. At WOT, this thing is just downright nasty.
The loaner is a 301a equipped xlt 2wd, so it probably weighs a good bit less, but overall the truck feels stiffer and more responsive. My 2016 Fx4 feels like an old cadillac floating down the highway, doesn't feel like a truck at all.
I did notice that in slow traffic the 10 speed feels like the converter is locked after 1st gear, the truck is a little jerky in touch and go traffic.
Overall the 2018 has me thinking about trading mine in for the V8.

I got a 16 Lariat, not an FX4 but mine is the 157" wb and it drives really nice to me. On ours it depends on the gearing, mine is a 3.55 & my old truck was a 3.73. The lower gear seemed to throw you back more on takeoff but the new one is just as fast imo. The new 10 speeds do skip shift, where it will skip 2nd for 3rd, or 4th to 5th, for example, so that might attribute to the jerky shift at low speed. I've never had anything against the 5.0 I think it's a good engine as well. There's a few options if you want to supercharge one should you wind up going that route. All up to you preference and money-wise. I like my EB, all I do is drive it & do oil changes.

I think it has more to do with the 10spd vs 6spd than the v8 vs eb. I drove a 17 5.0 lariat before buying my 18. I was coming from a supercharged 12 with a 5.0 and never drove a EB before. So when I test drove the 18 EB with the 10spd it felt quicker than the 17 with the 5.0 and 6spd. But I have also never drove a EB with a 6spd.

I own a 6 speed 5.0 and have driven a 10 speed 5.0 and honestly there was not any difference I could feel besides shifting more.

Interesting...then I would say what I was feeling is the difference in down low TQ vs the 6/10spd. The 17 5.0 I drove felt lazy (compared to my 12 with a roush blower) but when I drove the EB I was surprised how it felt. I dont plan to tune or anything this time so I went EB and have been enjoying it.

I love the way my 2017 3.5L EcoBoost drives with the 10 speed.

2018 5.0 10 speed owner here, I got 3.55 gears and the truck drives fantastic. The transmission will shift a little "harsh" when it's VERY cold out, but once it warms up you can't feel the shifts.
