Default 2018 and up: Oil Separator Needed?

With the 2018+ trucks now having direct and port injection helping burn off, do the Gen 2 3.5 EB trucks need these oil separator kits?

Just got the truck and have less than 100 miles on it, but want to go ahead and get the small things knocked out. First up is the CAC weep hole. Then oil separator if it's still needed on the new motor design.

No need for a CAC weep hole on the 2nd gen EB. Don't waste your money on a catch can either.

So they fixed the condensation issues in the CAC with GEN 2 as well?

There was no need for a catch can on any MY.

I have a 2018 5.0L I snagged one from American Truck for around $130 just to see. Had it on 200 miles and had a small puddle of oil in it. checked after 1000 miles and had about 1/8 of an inch in the bottom. That would have gone straight back into my intake, so I feel it is worth the money. VERY EASY 15 minute install(max). will update at my next oil change in 2500 miles. I feel it is definitely worth it, but to each their own.

I have the same JLT separator on my 3.5L 2017. I didn't install it until 9000 miles. After about 800 miles now I haven't had anything inside. Even though the dual injection GEN 2's get the valve cleaning from the port injection they still get the same oil fumes from the PCV valve going through the motor. I figured for $139.00 why not.

Interesting. Most threads on them all seem to agree they catch a lot of oil that would have gone into the cylinder otherwise. But those are 2017 and older.

Why do people think that stuff in the catch can is proof that they solved some problem?

P.T. Barnum

I laugh every time I see these threads, but hey, their money, but I know I can find a lot of better things for $139 than something that isn't required, needed, or anything else for that matter. The oil that collects there is due to condensation from the long hoses cooling the vapor, but the oil that gets recycled is in a vapor state and does not condense, but gets burnt instead. It wont condense on the valves as they are hotter than the air going through them, and it wont condense on the pistons either, but cool the vapor down enough and sure it will collect.

There really is only one use case for them, Racing engines, that is all.

Because the people selling catch cans are pretty convincing and some people are pretty gullible.
