I ordered a brand new 1968 Ford Fairlane 500, when it came it had an intermittent rattle.I finally narrowed it down to the dash area, laying on my back with my feet over the seat ( I could do that back then) I felt around under the dash and found a church key (beer can/ bottle opener).
Your story doesn't surprise me at all.
It was common in those days for workers to sit inside of cars on the assembly line eating their lunch or whatever.
As much as i hate seeing robots taking away hi paying jobs, at least they don't use church keys.

Update
Truck spent another 8 days in the shop for the 4x4 system. 7-9-18 to 7-16-18. This time they replaced the wiring harness for the 4x4 system. Said it had came loose and was touching the manifold and it had melted two wires together. Seems to be working again but time will tell. Faxed all the documents to my lemon law attorney and they have taken the case. Said it could take up to 3 months for Ford to respond but he doesn’t see them giving any problems over it. Said he does a lot of cases against Ford. I’ve had such good luck with Ford I will probably get another one but time will tell. I’ll keep posting updates as I can.

It looks like the engine problem was on Ford and the numerous 4x4 problems were caused by a mechanic that didn't go back over his work. If he had looked over everything good the plug would have been connected and the wiring harness would be in place instead of touching the exhaust manifold. It makes you wonder what else he didn't do right that will cause a problem down the road.
It is a crap shoot on whether you get a good mechanic. It only takes one to make mistakes that make the others look bad.

Dang that sucks! Sorry to hear that man. Slightly off topic but goes to speak of the quality of assembly line. I had a rattle in my door panel. I was going to add keypad entry anyway so I removed the door panel when the part arrived. As soon as I removed the door panel I find a 10mil nut floating around in the top of the door panel. It took me a minute to figure out that it was the same nut that secures the mirror. It was tucked in a bracket near the top of the door just below the mirror. The person assembling the truck must have dropped the nut and instead of looking for it just grabbed another and left the "extra" one in the door. I get that crap happens but reading these forums makes me realize that there is more and more of it going on. In the name of speed and profit, quality and accuracy get lost. This is not exclusive to Ford but damn guys......get it together. It may be that the internet has given a louder voice to problems but you would think that manufacturers would realize that and re-emphasize quality. It only takes one video of a lousy FedEx guy chucking a TV over a fence to give the rest of the company a bad name.
