I never cared for the 2015-2017 model looks in any trim.
When the 2018 came out I was like ya, much better!

With all the issues I went through, I decided not to get another 4WD, and haven't regretted it....yet. Besides I can buy a lot of sets of snow tires for what the 4WD costs, and don't care what resale is since I don't plan to get rid of the truck any time soon.
Thanks for the info. So, your truck's issue was in the front differential? The sound we have been hearing seems to come from the rear end. So far, no detectable vibration or anything other than the noise. I need to get my service appointment scheduled!

Some of these items were known to me before my purchase and some were not. Like many, I am not a hard core brand loyalist; I start every purchase with an open mind. My last three trucks were 2013 F150, 2015 F150, 2016 Ram Eco Diesel.

First I want to say, this is more a letter to Ford than a rant to the Forum members! A 2021 redesign is on the horizon so please start listing to us. I am an engineer myself and therefore I believe that I am a little extra critical when it comes to poor design decisions (however small) that product managers and engineer’s allow to persist year to year. Poor engineering does not bother me as much as refusing to acknowledge and rectify it given the opportunity.

Here we go!!

1) Backup Camera - worst than any truck I've owned, tiny bit of rain snow, or frost renders it useless. I did not have this problem on my 2015 so I assume it is the new tailgate design or the Tech package. Because of the time of year the camera has been only 20% useful.

The truck went through a refresh for 2018 and all I see changed is an uglier front grill. Amen on the backup camera -I don't have any other cameras on my XLT, so can't speak to their performance. I was surprised to see how crappy the backup camera is, and how it is entirely useless when wet or if snow, etc is around. I do not have a lot of the other tech, so it is the camera. I will add that my wife's 2016 Flex has the same crap camera performance, so it isn't just the F150s. I had a rental Toyota mini car of some sort recently, and its camera was crystal clear, even though it was a fairly basic model with minimal features. The last time this came up, a lot of guys chimed in that it isn't a big deal to go out and wipe off your camera. Well, if I have to wipe it off before leaving, then wipe it again at my destination if I want to see to back up, and then again when leaving my destination, in the rain, etc., I would definitely call that a pain in the @$$, whether you want to classify it as a big deal or not! An upgrade to the camera and a small lip or cover piece above the camera would make a huge difference in the performance and probably at a minimal cost difference.

Default Skips 2nd gear - thoughts, suggestions, fixes?

2018 F-150 2.7E XLT SCrew
Purchased on Dec 31 2018, currently 1700 miles

I noticed a time or two leaving work, while driving very slowly through the parking garage, my truck shifts a little hard coming out of first.
Yesterday, I paid more attention to it and I noticed that my truck always skips 2nd gear. I drove around the neighborhood last night very slowly trying to get it to go from 1st to 2nd, but it always goes right to 3rd.

It does the same thing when down shifting, although once or twice within the last 24hrs I did see it in 2nd as I was slowing down and maintaining speed.
It moves fine through all other gears.

Bummed. Thoughts, suggestions, fixes?

Going from 1st to 3rd is quite common. Depending on how you drive and the weight of what your hauling or towing will impact the shifting patterns of your 10 speed transmission.
Shifting from 1st to 3rd or 5th to 7th is not defective or indicate a problem with transmission...its designed to skip gears and shift this way.

@xrlizard

have a little bit more of an update for you, looked at the bearings/races up close and the one has 2 score marks in it and the outer one has one score mark, but the races are egged out due to it wobbling around some

Thanks! Do you know what causes that sort of damage? I do not know a lot about pinion gearing and its issues. Need to read up on it I guess!

not enough preload on the bearings will cause excessive play under high torque situations (like acceleration)

basically means the pinion shaft can ''walk'' around in the case

My 3rd to 5th i find isn't as smooth as I'd like either...much smoother when it goes 3-4-5. The other 'skips' seem good.

If you have the 'sport' mode feature of your transmission you should be able to hit all the lower gears consistently instead of skipping.. I keep meaning to try out the snow mode to see if it makes a difference for the icy roads up here...
