Default 2018 Lariat to 2018 Raptor? Talk me in or out of it

Hey Guys,

Just looking for a little input here. Let me start by saying, I've always wanted a Raptor. They are just plain badass. I should have just bought one to begin with, but my wife wasn't on board at the time. I know only keeping my truck for a year and trading it in I would take a big hit, so I'm here asking if I should scratch that itch or not...

My current situation: I have a 2018 Lariat with 16K miles on it. And I added about $5k in wheels/tires/shocks/Bakflip/etc. I looked up the current trade in value and it is about what I owe. So I realize I would be taking about at $16K hit (not including mods). I could keep all my mods minus the Fox shocks and put them on the Raptor, so at least I wouldn't lose out too much there.

So really my question is, will my 2018 Lariat depreciate so much more than a 2018 Raptor to offset that $16k hit over say 5 years? I think if the difference in depreciation offset me to about a $6k hit I would be more than happy to trade it in. Especially since I will be a lot happier driving it.

Here is another thing to factor in- If I keep the Lariat, I will most likely be installing new gears, towing mirrors, and airbags, so that would be another ~$4500 in mods that I wouldn't buy if I got a Raptor.

Your input is appreciated!

I have a Lariat and my friend has a Raptor, very similarly equipped. I love the way his truck looks, but doesn't really do anything else for me. for the price difference, a Raptor doesn't make sense to me. but neither does a $50-60k pick up, but here we are...

on the depreciation. I don't think the 2G Raptors will hold their value like the 1G's have, just my gut. see alot more of them and almost every dealer has at least one locally.

sounds like you're prepping your Lariat to towing, you know the Raptors don't tow well???

Yup, I know they don't tow well. And Yes I would be prepping my Lariat for towing. My thoughts are if I were to buy a Raptor I would just use my Dodge 3500 for towing when I need to tow. But if I keep the Lariat, it is getting new gears regardless because I currently have 3.31's and bigger tires..

I would tend to think that the current Raptor won't retain a much higher percentage of it's original value than your current truck,
like jrw said, they seem to be making an awful lot of them.
Another thing I wonder about is how much more will insurance cost you with the Raptor?
Since so much of the bodywork( fenders, bumpers, grille, hood etc ) is unique to that model it seems like it would be very costly
to fix any accident damage, and of course insurance companies will charge higher premiums on vehicles like that.( plus the replacement cost is higher if it's totaled )

Just a couple thoughts, not really trying to talk you out of it.

I agree, take those 3.31s out and throw them in the scrap pile.
edit: if you keep your current truck

For the $16K hit you'd take, you could build one hell of an offroading machine out of your Lariat. At the end of the day, it's a financial decision... you clearly don't *need* a Raptor, and any depreciation difference (even if one exists) will never make up for the hit you'll take trading that Lariat in. Do you want one $16K bad? If so, and if you can afford it, go buy it.

current raptor uses a turbo charged V6, not a V8... deal breaker!

Yup, they are garbage, especially with larger tires. The trans is driving me nuts with this tire/gear combo!

I agree 100%. I guess I just need to figure it out for myself and maybe go drive one to see if its worth it. Maybe that will help me decide if I should go that route or just regear my truck and live with it for a few years then think about upgrading.

Isn't this just speculation? Ford is kind of all in on the EB so I couldn't see them going away from it.
I actually am a big fan of the EB platform, so that isn't something that would sway me. And personally I'd rather have a supercharged Coyote than a bigger 7.0L!
