2018 F150 5.0 10R80 Transmission Low Speed Gear Change Squeal (With Video)

2018 F150 (5.0, 3.31 gears, built 7/2018; Dearborn Plant) with 10 speed trans makes a squeal (whine, whistle) noise when changing gears at low speeds. Sounds like a tea kettle went off. Noise was evident since new at 300 miles, currently at 2,000 miles. Noise occurs after trans has warmed up (temp at time of video approx. 175 deg). Noise is worst at normal operating temp (206 °F - 215 °F), and driving in Sport & Tow Mode. Trans seems to operate normally otherwise, noise is not noticeable when transmission shifts quickly. I have noticed the sound up to/around 5th gear, although it's much quieter in higher gears. The noise corresponds exactly with the timing of the gear change (at peak RPM right before shifting), and goes away immediately after the change. Noise was worst when pulling a small camper. Driving around 10 mph, the trans held the 1st gear longer than normal and the squeal persisted for 3-5 seconds until it shifted into 2nd.

Ford did not mention anything about a gear change noise with SSM 47515.

The noise is not coming from the throttle body.

The two Ford dealerships I’ve talked to know of the issue, but do not know what is causing it or if there’s a fix. Still waiting for Ford to respond. I believe some other vehicles with the 10 speed may make the noise, but I’m not sure if it’s as loud?? The issue seems to be most prevalent on 2018 F150’s with the 5.0 (V8).

Best guess at this point is that the sound may be related to the variable displacement vane transmission fluid pump and/or its gears.

Known and well complained issue.

It's not the Whistle. It's the hydraulic pump in the transmission loading clutch packs for the shift. I believe if you search hard enough there's a thread where a Ford engineer explained to someone on here that the sound is unfortunately normal and is not a problem with the transmission.

Yes, I've read that thread, and it looks like people are mixing up different issues. My issue is not related to the Throttle Body. I've read every thread and post on the internet possibly related to this... I wanted a thread with video for this specific noise/issue. How prevalent is it, are some louder than others? I don't accept it being a normal characteristic...

I remember when Fords AOD Transmission in all their panther cars and trucks had that loud whine and it was normal.....

I will look, but I have not come across that thread yet. If you happen to find it, please kindly provide the link.

Same exact noise as mine. I learned to ignore it cause the truck runs great.

Good video where the noise can be heard well. Glad I do not have that. 2018 5.0 built Oct 12, 2017 in Dearborn. I do have the throttle bidy whistle and off throttle rattle that can be felt through VCT solenoid. Also had a few other issues fixed under warranty, but nothing major.

I have the exact same sound if not a little louder than yours. Drives me nuts. Dealer said it's normal.

Your truck is still very new. Everything is really tight from the factory and need time to break in. I suggest you keep driving it and see if the noise is still as loud at the first oil change. If it is have them look at while it's there for an oil change. You have plenty of warranty left.
