2018 F150 3.0 Diesel Speculation and Facts

I have been interested in this engine since the rumors began to fly. I have been watching for updates and reading as much as I can. Probably the best resource that I found was TFL Truck actually reviewing (and towing with) the Land Rover that the Lion engine is currently used in.

All of the information I have found has been on other forums and corners of the internet. The problem is that I check this forum daily, and don't like to check up on other places to see updates. I figured that I would start this thread as a place where we could share speculation and facts that we find elsewhere, and once the engines are out, provide some reviews.

Ill start with this: User pioneer74 stated in another thread that Job #1 for the diesel will be 2/26/18.

I have read a few things back and forth and many people think it will be identical to the land rover engine.

I also hear it will be similar but not identical. supposedly going to use twin turbos like the other ecoboost mills vs land rovers single. supposedly it will be as if you made the 2.7L ecoboost into a diesel. which makes a bit of sense I guess - considering how the 2.7L was designed.

Regardless of which there are really only so many ways to skin a cat. I also hear Ford's development working on making the engine run hotter to run cleaner. I see nothing to prove any of this though. It wouldn't surprise me at all if due to various packaging constraints for land rover - ford's version makes more power and/or torque.

will be interesting to see the finished product as yet another rumor says the US Ranger - and it's next iteration Explorer counterpart would have this same diesel engine offering at day one. I'll believe that when I see it also. mostly because if that does come out near 2020 I'll be in the market for the new explorer/everest device.

Catalyst, EGR, and DEF used on the Land rover diesel, which is what Ford will use.

IMO stay away unless you like 5 figure engine repair bills before 150,000.

EPA has killed the reliable, frugal, low cost diesel engine.

Get over it and move on.

TFL Truck has a video out with info found on Ford's web page.

My thoughts exactly. Ford is offering this engine because Ram has one. Ford will not allow anybody to one up them when it comes to trucks. The gas engines will out perform the diesel in every category except fuel economy which is the main reason to offer it. It's a stop gap engine for CAFE and competition until the F-150 hybrid is ready.

Everyone gets all hyped up over these diesels.

I must admit I did too when the Dodge came out until I drove one. What a dog.

I felt like I was going to get run over pulling out in traffic.

And then there is the towing capacity. People like I assume it's a diesel so it should tow a lot. Nope.

I suspect the Ford will be no different. So unless your the guy driving 30,000 highway miles a year not towing anything the diesel is sorta stupid.

Isn't this the same I-5 engine in the Transit and that has been used world wide for years? That engine seems to have a history of being reliable. I test drove a Winnebago Class C camper built on the Transit and it wasn't a dog and averaged 17-18 mpg for the weekend we tested it.

I don't think so. It's a 3.0L v6 that was designed by ford and in use in a Land Rover as far as I know.

For about $1000 you can buy a full exhaust, tuner, and EGR delete kit to remove all of the EPA nastiness while picking up power and fuel economy at the same time. Diesels aren't done - they're just not cost effective in lighter trucks.
