Default 2018 F-150 V8 5.0 Engine loud knock

Hi guys

I just got my 2018 F150 XLT FX4 V8 5.0 for 3 month. Absolutely loved it! Recently I noticed my truck had pretty loud knock and it gets louder and louder now. The knocking comes from the passenger side. You can hear the louder hammering noise from passenger wheel well. Besides that, every morning after cold start, the engine compartment has quick flapping noise right after release gas pedal in 15-20 mph speed. How about any of 2018 V8 5.0 guys' experience?

I googled and found V8 5.0 knocking happened around 2012 models F150. My truck is 2018 XLT, maybe Ford re-used coyote engine bad batch for lower trim level trucks.

I also call the Ford dealership and made a appointment. The service guy verified the noise with me but next day he called me and said the technician said its all good after they performed oil change. I picked up the truck after work and drove home. The noise seems getting louder and the knock is harder.

It is now 4000 miles only. I really want to keep this F-150 with me for a long long time. Please advise me how to approach this issue with Ford and get it fixed?

Start with the service manager at your dealer.

Sounds bad.

I'm not sure why you need to ask this question. It's a 2018 with 4K on the clock. You approach it by calling your dealer, telling them your brand new truck has a bad engine knock, and asking when they can get it in AND provide you a vehicle to drive. If they are unwilling to do anything about it, you go to another dealer.

And no, Ford didn't reuse old motors in lower trim level trucks.

The technician saying that knock is normal is BS.
IMO based on the video it sounds like something serious wrong causing that knock.

If you get no satisfaction from your dealership, try another dealership.
I wouldn't take a 'thats normal' with that knock and aggressively push the issue sooner not later..
If its something serious that engine could possible die or even grenade when you least expect it leaving you stranded.

I'm no expert on these engines, but that sounds exactly like the knock I had on my '09 4.6-3V. Truck only had 300 miles it. Was noticeable at idle and up to about 1700 RPM and then gradually quieted as the RPMs increased. Louder on one side. Turned out the cam phaser was bad on the right cylinder bank. Replaced under warranty and never had another issue for 9 years of service with some HD towing. I know the two engines are somewhat different, but if it is an issue with the VVT, the tech should be able to diagnose it pretty easily....that is, if he puts a bit of effort in.

I wish. No, it's gas V8. Talked to service manager today and dropped her off again. The dealer was overloaded with engine services. Hopefully get update soon.

Use a mechanics stethoscope on the right front valve cover area, right above where the VCT "phasers" are located. If loudest at this area, you may also feel the tapping if you place your fingers on the either of the VCT solenoids on that cover. If noise is in this area, it points to a defective VCT phaser on that cylinder bank. If the VCT phaser is defective, you may also be experiencing a "performance degradation" in the form of decreased mpg. A common difficulty in working with dealerships on these types of engine noises is that Ford tends to tie their hands on any repair if there is no code present, or loss of engine performance.
