2018 5.0L - Engine Rattle Noise On Deceleration And/Or Acceleration ***TSB 18-2354***

Ambitious But Rubbish
I spoke to my sales manager friend at Dealership #2 (where the truck is now) and he told me the buyback discussion has to be between me and Ford. The dealerships only process them once corporate already approves the request. So, got back on the phone and talked to Customer Care again. Updated the nice woman on the phone with my details and was nice but firm in saying "this is what Dealer #2 told me, the tech and I agree but Ford does not, I would like to initiate a buyback."
She took no issue with it and took down a few details (current dealer and mileage on truck) and will be passing my case along to a manager who can review things and call within 24 hours. I got a new case number as a result, too.
This is a whole lot of hoop-jumping just to be heard by the right people.

I officially requested buyback today as well. It was a “good-faith” review she said, whatever that means. Also, now on my third case number as well. Truck has been in the shop for a month on this, it’s third, visit for the noise. NM lemon law is 4 times for the same problem. I’ll probably wait to hear back from Ford on their decision before sending the last chance letter. But even if they want me to take it for a second opinion, or back in for anything really, that’ll be my 4th visit.
Dealer on this visit didn’t do anything. Other than listen to another customer vehicle (ironically, that hadn’t had the TSB performed, mine has) and declare it “normal.” That took them pretty much a whole month. Crazy.
Their official explanation on the paperwork from visit 2 was that the rattle is being caused by the HPFP.
Now we wait. Again. Ready to be done with this POS and move on.
edit: also. Mine rattles all the time. Even when hot. It’s just much quieter once warm. But very much still there.

That’s what I said.
They also mentioned that one of the FSEs told them that the noise is also caused by the transmission clutches rattling together when the transmission is cold. Which is why it only happens in drive, and why resetting the adaptive learning fixes it for a short while. Also why we don’t hear it on our test drives. I thought this theory was actually pretty interesting.
That said, I don’t have the energy, time or interest in troubleshooting the issue myself anymore. I didn’t buy a new truck to be my own detective chasing problems and noises. I’ll follow the process to get it fixed, otherwise I’ll
be consulting an attorney. They can throw all the theories they want at me. I don’t really care anymore.
Bottom line is, the TSB addresses and offers a fix for this noise. It doesn’t work. Period. They need to be held accountable

I’m feeling your pain as are we all. If I was still in the business of car repair I would nail this down myself but like you said we all shouldn’t have to be doing that or even having this conversation well let’s hope someone finds the problem and Ford recognizes it frickin BS..

I'm with you, regardless of time and energy, none of us bought brand-new trucks to end up as the ones troubleshooting them. I don't want mine anymore, I'm over it. Here's hoping I have a good call with whoever from Customer Care today regarding a buyback.

Sounds like you’re about a step behind where I’m at now. Your call will be with a regional CSM. They’ll gather information and will be your point of contact moving forward. Mine provided me with their direct line and email, so that was nice. I told my regional CSM that I’d like to be processed for the buyback after trying to get her up to speed. She said I’d hear back in 3-5 business days, but sometimes sooner. She also insisted that I’ll most likely have to take it for a second opinion, which sucks because the closest alternate Ford dealer is an hour from my home. But no biggie, I’m happy to do it if they can actually try to do something for me. Good excuse to visit the big city with the wife anyway.
I’m 99% they’ll deny it. I don’t quite meet lemon criteria yet. Gonna give them all opportunities to provide me with a resolution before I pursue any other options. Think I’ll skip BBB based on others results here and contact my AG if it gets there.
Anyway. Headed in this morning to pick up the truck from it’s 3rd visit. Hopefully Ford doesn’t wise up and ask them to keep it so it holds my third visit open.
I’m with you 100% Brake. Over it. Ready to move on.

It's been at dealerships for this particular issue for 5.2% of my length of ownership so far. VA law claims three times for the same issue which I now meet. Mine is a lease and I'm going to push for either "the buyback process" or just tell the rep look, it's right at the mileage mark for the one-year point (15k) so I can just drop it at the dealer and we call it an early lease termination, bing bang boom they can re-sell it to someone else after a detail and call it good. We'll see. I'm done with running around to various dealerships and having to figure things out on my own. My 2010 Range Rover made fewer weird noises (none, actually) and was in for fewer service appointments with 105k on its odometer. The whole point of a new truck was no funny business.

Update: (copied from build thread)
Just got off the phone with the dealer service rep. I've been informed that the truck is done and does not have the issue anymore. She mentioned that they had done roughly 15 hours of warranty labor and needed other parts to remedy (rep didn't know exactly what). Asked them to park it outside for now to let it cool down completely and retest in a few hours. Ill ask to speak to the rep if I can when I get there this evening and update following.
