Default 2018 5.0 Knock/Tap

I know a handful of others have mentioned their 5.0 sounded like it was knocking. Ive made videos of my 5.0 that is exhibiting this sound, and compared it to another 2018 5.0 that seems to be running fine. My truck is currently at the dealer for several repairs. They replaced the cam phasers for the “rattle” not sure if it fixed the issue as I have not gotten my truck back, the dealer is now looking into this knock which they appear to be taking seriously and agree that it does not sound “normal”. I will update this thread when i know more, just hope I can save others trouble down the road if Ford will agree this sound if not “normal” and does something about it.

took a video of the loaner 2018 f150 5.0 I am currently driving, For comparison of the knocking noise my truck is exhibiting. Both trucks were completely warm after 50min drive home from work.

Loaner:

My 2018 f150 5.0:

If you have decent speakers, you can clearly hear what sounds like tapping or knocking in my motor.

My 2018 3.5TT makes the exact same noise... Dealer kept it for a week when I took it in around 5k miles. They compared it to other 2018's with similar milage and said they all make that noise and claim its coming from the mechanical HPFP, which both the 3.5 and 5.0 use for direct injection. I don't like that explination or excuse, but I've driven another 15K for a total of 20k and the noise hasnt changed much.

I'll admit I'm having trouble hearing much of a difference between the 2, but it sounds just like my 5.0. 60k on it so far and hasn't changed.

Have them pull the plugs and look for scoring and the oil filter. Do not let them cut it open without you there. It's not normal.

I asked them to cut the oil filter open when I originally dropped it off. It seems they convieniently “forgot” but they do seem like they are trying to get to the bottom of it. If they end up coming back and saying it is normal, i still have quite a bit of warrantly left so i am fine with running it for a couple k and cutting the filter open myself on video to show them.

There's definitely something there, but the weird part is the rate and intensity changes. The noise isn't on every revolution of the engine. I'd be thinking the usual timing/VCT stuff.

if I increase the RPM the sound speeds up and slows down.

Can you hear a knock when you put your foot on the brake and lightly give it gas (like 800 RPM) while it's in gear?

You know that sounds pretty much exactly like cylinder block distortion that plagued the 11-14 5.0. Mine makes the same noise but more faint among the other ticks, taps and rattles associated with this engine in 2018.
