I agree the light weight stuff is for gas mileage. I do not understand why Ford does this, as we are not talking about a passenger car here, even though many people are buying pickup truck just for that which accounts for the crew cabs.

My point is, the thinner fluid will not create a noticeable gain in fuel economy. Ford ate the bill on our trucks repairs, as it's under warranty. This thin stuff is not economical from any standpoint. Another dumb thing Ford did we discovered on our new 1980 Ford Bronco. It had large holes punched in the frame to save weight. Betcha they never reduced the weight by 5 pounds which again equated to negligible fuel savings while weakening the frame. I believe they stopped this idiocy a year or two later. I'm not picking on Ford, as they all do stuff like this to appease the envro-mental-ists.

Hey, is this info for the 6-sp or the 10? Good info, but need to know if it applies to my 2018 truck with the 10-speed, to write it down. It's crazy how freaking Ford can be so cheap as to use a 'universal' transmission dipsticks that can cause confusion and possible damage. Geez.

The only answer I can give as a fact is it is for my 2018 5.0 10 speed FX4 XLT. The mechanic said it was for four other applications. I do not know if those other applications are for other F150 configurations, different Ford models, or anything that uses the 10 speed which includes Chevrolet. This would be a worry if you change fluid yourself. I recommend checking with your dealer's service department for the correct level of your truck.

I'm very warranty conscious and will have the dealer do more technical fluid changes such as this 10 speed. I'm glad I paid for this fluid change as I would have overfilled it based on a Youtube video and I would have had to sort the issue out myself as my doing the work would have not been warranteed.

But I must agree. That little plastic dipstick can't cost over 50 cents to make. Having the correct individual dipstick for each vehicle application would save them lots of money in the warranty department not to mention the customer satisfaction department.

Update:

Same local dealer (not where I purchased) has continued to be helpful and performed a TSB for grinding noise, which I guess now Ford is admitting is not normal? They also did PCM for terrible shifting from gears 1-6 and reset the adaptive learning again. My truck runs exactly the same! I am really convinced it is doomed. Going to try and put 500 miles on it as they suggested before taking it again but this has been going on for almost a year and my truck only has 4k miles. I have not enjoyed owning my first F-150 and sadly the experience is leaving me sour on Ford. I bought one not only for performance but I respected the company for not taking a taxpayer bailout, which is why I did not consider a Chevy/GM. I have started to look into the lemon law/ buyback process and opened up a case with Ford last fall in case it got to this point. I think it's just bad luck at the end of the day since most F-150's seem to run great. Good luck to everyone experiencing problems

Agh.

Here's hoping you can execute and get satisfaction. The following may seem like an insult, but it isn't: With your buyback check, take half of it and go look for a Certified Pre Owned 2016 5.0 whatever F150 with the 6-speed. Mine has been nearly flawless, save for an intake manifold replacement due to a broken Intake Manifold Runner Control (busted floppenflappers). The truck ran and did not leave me stranded before the warranty manifold replacement occurred. If I had to do it all over again I'd be looking for another '16.

Best of luck to you.

That's never any good hearing that..

If you asked me at 4,000 miles or at six months, I would've said give me back my 14. That truck was perfect in every sense of the word.
Around 11,000 miles and 5,000 miles after the trans tsb, it was almost as if my engine and transmission stopped fighting each other.

It took a full year for me to settle into this truck and to confidently say everything works as it should.

I still theorize that an 8 speed transmission would've been plenty for now. I find myself always locking out 7th thru 10th gear around town.
On a rare occasion I'll lock out 10th on the highway. The rpm's barely rise up at 65 mph and I can do what I want without that downshift hesitation even as subtle as it is.
Pair this ten speed up with the 6.2 and 500+hp and I bet it would keep this transmission in check.

Anyhow, whatever you end up doing, hope it works for you.

On / Off throttle noise NOT normal, May need new Engine

For those of yous who struggle with your dealer telling you the throttle on off noise, rattle is normal, I can tell you it is not. The problem seems to all be connected beginning with oil consumption, a vct problem, be mechanical or software, timing chain tension, and oil pressure. I have had my 2018 5.0 in the shop countless times. From misfires, to noise commplaints, recalls and recently at 20 000km, a whole new engine! ect. This rattle has I believe has cause metal shavings in my engine, due to phaser and timing chain tension. Metal shavings thus interfere with phasers and tensioner causing misfires and engine damage. My engine was opened up to replace tensioner, cams, phasers, vct, guides, ect... 4 days later they told my there was too much metal shavings in oil and required an engine. 3 weeks or so later, a new engine, and I have the same on/off rattle, which sounds like steel on steel... here we go again... so fed up... Anybody solve this????

Mine has the same issue. I actually have several other issues im dealing with. My truck also knocks when under load between 1000 and 2000 rpm. Ford Canada is saying its normal operating noises which im not buying for a second. Those are just a couple of the issues. My truck is back at the dealership after spending three days there last week. Im getting power steering lag with the auto start stop. Almost got tboned the other day. I dont want my truck back I want a new one, I dont trust this one with my family in it.

The steering lag with the auto stop start is new issue for me as well.
Yes truck is running no power steering about 1-2 seconds lag.
Would love to hear how you make out with that.
