2018 5.0 Great Freeway Gas Mileage
It was road trip time with the 2018 5.0 totally stock with SE 20s and the 3.73. I have to admit my in town playing around gas mileage had always been in the 16-17 and I wasn’t too impressed. Yesterday I took about 200 mile freeway drive and just wow over 20 mpg. This wasn’t some wimpy all down hill coasting, real trip from Maple Valley (Seattle area) to OR coast (Seaside). Some decent hills and was driving 60-75 depending on traffic speed limits. I have ACC and used the ECO button as well for 95% of the time. As they say a picture is worth 1,000 words. To date my lie-o-meter has been within .5 MPG’s so I am guessing this to be accurate.
My build is late Aug 2018 and my tranny overall is not the problem child you often hear about. The one thing I don’t like is the whistle you get in drive through and parking garages otherwise I forget it does it. My prior 2016 same truck minus 5.0 changes and 10 speed with 3.55 and the best I saw was 18 mpg’s with it.

have you corrected the calc tables yet. the MPGs on the dash are optimistic from the factory typically buy 1-2 MPGs. The only real accurate way to check is to calc it by hand from the odometer miles and how much you put in at the pump. The dash is consistantly 1.5-1.6 optimistic for me in my 5.0, 3.73, on 20s.

Thats about the mpg i get with my 5.0 maybe a little better per the lie 'o meter.
I can get up to 25 mpg on 45 mph county roads coasting as much as possible for stops.
The two big factors i noticed about these trucks for reducing mpg (other than lead feet) is a moderate to strong head wind velocity and speeds over 55 mph also related to lousy pickup truck aerodynamic design..

I've wondered why Ford doesn't put as much effort into aerodynamics as they do with the aluminum body and ecoboost engines. My gas mileage tanks over 65 MPH. That's to be expected to some extent with something this size, but it seems like there is a lot of room for improvement.
I agree that there could possibly be at least some minor aerodynamic improvements while still keeping it looking like a truck
Having said that, i got to believe pick up truck body designers have gone about as far as they can meeting both CAFE standards and customer preferences.

You can fix the lie-o-meter to be accurate if you follow the steps in this thread.
Fix your readout:

Side note, I'm sure they could make trucks more aerodynamic. I'm not sure if people would buy them, since they wouldn't look as 'truck-ish" as we have today.

You're not playing hard enough. Should be 10 - 12.
I can get, when I use restraint, a paper 22.0 MPG when I keep it to 70 MPH in 6th (6-speed), showing 1800 rpm, but those are in optimum conditions, i.e. calm wind conditions.

i got stuck on a 2 lane highway a few weeks ago behind a truck pulling a double wide spit in half so two trucks in front of me. I had to endure them for about 25 miles...in that time my top speed was 50mph and the lie o meter said i was getting 29.7 mpg. 5.0 10speed 4x4 stock wheels

They did put in the effort, and came up with shutters to redirect the wind! 😉
