2018 3.5 Ecoboost cold start rattle
So my truck has the dreaded cold startup rattle for about 3 seconds after a cold soak. The TSB's that addressed this issue were for the older models and I believe this was supposed to be fixed for the 2018's but not so much in my case. After taking three videos and showing my service center, they still needed to replicate the sound. I dropped off my truck three different nights and started it the next morning with a tech. The third time it made the noise. They said they just worked on another 2018 with the same issue and would be ordering the same parts and I am waiting for a callback. In the meantime, does anybody know of a TSB for the 2018's with this issue? Anybody have experience with what parts should be replaced? I read numerous threads about the timing chain and phasers getting changed out but sometimes that did not even fix the issue for others. This is ridiculous for a new truck and probably the last time I will buy a Ford...also service so far has been horrible and if it wasn't for my persistence and micro-managing, they would not have done a thing. Seems like every service center in my area doesn't want to do their job.

Maybe post one one of your videos or check out an extensive thread: https://www.f150forum.com/f118/17-3-...rattle-401441/

Does it rattle at first startup, or is it off-throttle while in gear?

Hey thanks, I will post up a video. It is only on cold start at this point and my dealer says they are replacing the phasers. From what I read, that will only delay the same from happening again. Thanks for the link

See if they'll replace the tensioners as well.

Yeah, cold engine 'deceleration rattle' is normal, according to Ford (internal cleaning mechanism). But a cold start rattle, which is very similar but louder, is definitely not, since it happens after 'x' mileage. The problem is Ford is replacing bad parts with equally bad ones, which makes no sense. My build date is Jun 4, 2018. Hope my truck never develops that, but we'll see. Only 7,500 now, so need to get into the teens, or 20K miles, to know for sure. The cold engine rattle is definitely there, but only heard it once, since I never try to duplicate it (gunning the engine when cold).

So from what I am gathering from the other rattle thread, I should make sure the dealer changes the phasers, tensioners and does a pcm flash with the new parameters correct? Anything else?
