Sure, glass is glass, right? These car companies pinch pennies everywhere they can for greater profits. Ordering cheaper glass saves them a ton. I don't know why so many insist on replacing with OEM glass, since that's the cheap stuff.

Not in my experience, I have had more problems with aftermarket glass than factory glass. These days I always spec factory glass when replacing a windshield.

Might be right for others, but I can confirm that Ford puts cheap glass on its products...

Exactly, and that's the only reason why cars are about the same price right now than they were 10 years ago. (well, technology plays a key role, but cheaper parts are also in the equation).

Also, skip out on Safelite and have someone else do it. Might not apply to all techs but they have done poor work in the few times I've seen it.

Like other said, it's a comprehensive claim so it will not affect your rates. I have my comp deductible low ($50) because it only went up a few dollars versus a $500 ded. and it paid for itself on the second windshield.
my comp. ded. is $500.....I paid for my windows out of pocket.

I definitely noticed a difference between 3rd rate lowest cost Chinese glass and OEM Carlex. The shop accidentally put the wrong one in first, so I got to drive for a few weeks before it was swapped out. Visually it seemed like it had a faint distortion I could see when scanning across it. Also, it didn't seem to bead water well, but maybe the OEM glass just has a coating to help with that and I should have RainX'd it. But I've had other non-OEM that seemed ok, so I think quality just varies by brand.

But that's just my experience and what I would want in my vehicles. You're welcome to go with whichever you like.

I'm going off of personal experience. Living in Pennsylvania I have replaced a lot of windshields, seven to be exact. Two were aftermarket and neither lived up to expectations. One had distortion in the glass on the other didn't have the UV protection of the factory glass. Both replaced by reputable companies but I opted for the lower cost glass and it was a lower quality glass. I'm sure if the aftermarket glass is from a top tier manufacturer you will be fine but be careful. I did not like Safelite and I don't know who made the other one. Manufacturer glass has always met my expectations.

So you keep cracking cheap OEM soft windshields, but you keep on buying them. Bravo.
