Default 2017 Lower Bumper Grille

So somebody backed into my truck and hit the lower front grille with what I assume was a trailer hitch (based on height). I replaced the lower grill (see before and after pictures) and ziptied the splash shield back up, but noticed you can look right through the front bumper to see the lower part of the engine. I can't remember from before the damage as I had a front plate cover on it--- it is normal to have this exposed to the elements, or is there another grill/shield I forgot to install? Its a 2017 Lariat 5.0L

It looks to me that the replacement is for a Eco and not the 5.0. The 5.0 version you can’t see through like that.

Most 5.0 have the solid grille with the license plate holder.

I just changed mine and was concerned about it being opened. Most everyone told me it would be fine. I did not like seeing all the way in to the engine compartment. So I put a backing plate behind the new grille.

looks like you replaced it with the same grille. Where was your plate mounted. Do you have a block heater. I belive the 5.0 with block heaters use that grille.

Mine special edition xlt is wide open. But, I am thinking about adding the same lower grille as PJBAND.

I believe the two different bumper panels aren't so much due to EcoBoost or 5.0 but rather due to having an engine block heater (plug accessible next to the license plate) or not having one (panel can be closed off).

P.S.: Maybe the above goes for a normally-aspirated engine and EcoBoost get the open one regardless for intercooler airflow?

I'm pretty sure its the same lower grill that I had before. The license plate frame attached to the 2 longitudinal bars, but didn't bother getting another since we don't require front plates here. I do have a block heater so I suppose that's why.

I would say it is. If you don't like the open look now that you are not running a plate. Block it off. My state just last month now doesnt require front plate. So I changed mine but hated I could see the bright white oil filter. Just looked unfinished to me.
