The 10 speed uses 6 forward gears, one direct drive gear (where the input and output shaft spin at the same speed, so the ratio is 1.00) and 3 overdrive gears that are spaced extremely close to the top two gears in the current 6 speed.

But you can see based on the ratio list (This is GM's literature for the Hydramatic 10 speed which is literally exactly the same transmission) the gears are actually spaced reasonably far apart.

I am surprised 6th and 10th gear ratios are so close. I figured they would put a really high highway gear in for 10th.

I still don't get the "first volume-production 10-speed automatic transmission available to consumers from any automaker." thing. Isn't it a GM trans? I know no other trucks have a 10-speed, but I'm willing to bet Ford won't be the only one in 2017 with 10-speeds. Maybe they're just the first to advertise it?

It's a joint GM/Ford transmission, but Ford is hitting the streets on it first. I believe you'll be able to get the 2017 F150's with the 10 speed by this fall.

Isn't the first confirmed GM vehicle the ZL1 Camaro?

Only the 3.5EB gets the 10 speed in an F-150 for 2017. No details on when the 3.5N/A, 2.7L EB, and 5.0 get it. For 2017, they'll continue with the ZF based 6-speed.

From previous press releases, all 3.5L EB will be Gen 2 with the 10 speed. There is nothing to point to this engine and combination being an option, or available only on certain trims.

Very interesting.
The Added Torque can burn up tires at Stop light racing?
I've never driven a 10 speed transmission.
Would it get out of the gate any faster than the current 3.5 Eco. does now?
Does anyone know if they will keep the 3:55 and 3:73 rear ends?
I now nothing about 10 speed trans,. More torque, faster take off!

10 more Horses, 50 more Torque= $$$$

Correct. The transmission is a joint development. Each OEM will do their own programming. With the correct ratios and programming a 10-speed will provide much better off-the-line acceleration and will be in the meat of the torque curve throughout the whole speed/acceleration range to steady-state cruise.

I know someone who has a Chrysler 200 with the 9 speed auto. He says 9th gear is useless until you get to and over 80 mph. That's not very good ratios and/or programming in my book.
