It isn't necessary in automotive vehicles but in small engines and outboards it can be advantageous.

Blackboost, the computer will continue to pull back timing and AFR until it stops knocking..I could see a good difference if it was some ROT GUT fuel.
Bigdoser, I have seen stations here that sell the alcohol free as well, I would love to get some and do a testing on fuel economy. 2 things about alcohol-it absorbs water like no tomorrow and evaporates quickly, has less BTUs then gasoline oz to oz..So less MPG and HP/Tq...Gasoline stays fresher longer, a big plus.

And another point of running premium over the other grades is the additive package is supposed to be more aggressive and robust on the premium grades only.
Keeping the CCs and intake vales clean on 1st GEN ECOs priceless.

Both my 3.5EB F150 and my wife's 3.5EB Explorer Sport perform noticeably better on premium, especially in the Texas summer heat. We try to run only Top Tier brands (typically Costco and Quiktrip) as well.
Paranoid, maybe. But it works for us.

Not true. It was true in 1985. Hasn't been so for 20 years. Also, additives don't do squat for intake valves on direct injected engines, hence the trend to port + direct injection. CC's? If you mean combustion chambers, they they don't need cleaning, nor would an additive help.

For all you people who have extra money to literally burn on 93, Throw some my way. I'll kick you in the *****, buy myself a free dinner once a week, and we will both be satisfied.

No need to be a jerk because you can’t afford something. I run 93 because that’s what I want to do. Engine has run flawless for 10k miles and I can get close to 20mpg around town. I’ve never had a lack of power towing. That being said, I bet it would run just as good on 87. Like I said I want to run 93 so I do. It’s probably more mental than anything.
