There's the problem. Some says they run 91 octane per the manual, and they get blasted for wasting money. Some can't read the manual. Some can't embrace the technology and believe that an engine can tell the difference in the available octane.

And of course the Internet experts that Google everything, or watch one utube video and now their experts.

And some just like to argue.

if you can afford to run higher octane, higher quality gas - why wouldn't you? It will ONLY help performance.

Like everyone else here - I know the truck runs on 87 fine....I've run 10 tanks of it. I'm now running premium because I'm not that price sensitive and generally think retarding th timing isn't great for engines.

Even so - this won't make much of a difference because I'll get another truck before the truck hits 100k....so - really....what is all this thinking about?

Odds are - you will too. That's what the statistics say - average ownership 5-7 years.

Turboed engines usually need premium fuel...

Ford knew they couldn't produce a truck that was only capable of running on premium - they wouldn't have sold any.

The engine CAN run 87 octane fuel, but it definitively runs better on 91 octane fuel. Now, the downsides of running 87? Not sure there are any, besides less performance and perhaps better fuel economy. Is the premium fuel extra $ worth it? I calculated and no, it wasn't worth it.

This ''fuel grade'' topic is a never ending story (same as the ''should I change my oil at 5k or 10k topic). Guess it's a matter of personal taste.

Well I would love to be with my truck for a long time. I've always taken great care of my vehicles and kept them for years. My last vehicle was a 04 lincoln I had for 12 years with 189k miles. Always ran 87 but obviously it was a different engine. This is my first non V8 engine and will do my best for it to last well over the 100k mark.

I wonder if there is any benefit at all to running 89 octane?

I️ ran my 2011 EB 5 years and 199 k miles on 87.Maybe less than 10 tanks of 91 or above. No problems. Liked it and bought another EB in wife’s expedition last year and traded my 2011 this year on another EB gen 2. Look at it like an occasional luxury and Feed it steak every once in a while on 91. Never once used a fuel additive like we were accustomed to in the early days of unleaded. Drive and enjoy!
