Keeping the CCs and intake vales clean on 1st GEN ECOs priceless.

they
can put as many additives in the gas as they can, but on first gens it will do nothing for your valves..

So are you saying 5star’s dyno is inaccurate?

Yes. Or more likely, tampered with. It's like those youtube videos where they do a tug of war between a Ram and F-150, and the Ram wins, but the video was produced by a Ram dealership. Well duh...

Blackboost, the computer will continue to pull back timing and AFR until it stops knocking..I could see a good difference if it was some ROT GUT fuel.

It won't knock on a dyno. Towing a very heavy load uphill on a hot day will cause knock. Turning a dyno wheel won't.

I posted this in a previous thread:

I am 64 years old and keep very good records of my mpg. I knew beyond a reasonable doubt that using premium would never result in better mpg data.
At least I thought I did until this truck. Two weeks ago made a 200 mile round trip to buy some fruit trees. Reset the mileage/fuel and hit the highway. Averaged 22.2 for the drive. After that ran into a station having a sale on 93 so filled up (no 91 here). Drove about a week, then topped off the tank again with premium.
Then made the exact same drive back to the tree nursery. This time the average was 25.6. Same highway, same speeds, same driving conditions.
It aint supposed to happen but it did. Going to continue using 93 for a couple of months to see if this was a fluke or not. But today drove 220 miles on the interstate running 70 pulling a utility trailer weighing almost 1600 pounds and averaged 21.6.

I netted a 13% improvement. Only the owner can decide if the cost is worth it. And you might not get the same results I did.

Why would 5Star promote buying premium octane fuel for a stock tune? Considering they charge the same for an 87 octane tune vs a 93 octane tune, I doubt they care what you put in it, they make the same dollar either way.

Here is another article about the benefits of premium with multiple dyno runs. http://www.drivingline.com/articles/...-turbo-35l-v6/

Turbocharged engines always ran better on premium fuel... Small engines too...

I do believe that Ford engineered their EB engines to be capable to run on regular fuel mainly because the average joe wouldn't buy an ecoboost if it required premium fuel.

Premium fuel is average 20cent more expensive per liter where I live. That means roughly 25-30$ more for a full 136L tank.

Considering that running on premium might reduce my fuel consumption by 1-2L/100km MAX, that would mean I could roughly do an extra 100kms per tank. 100kms that would end up costing me 25-30$. Is it worth it? You do the maths!

What you guys need to stay away from is corn fuel. Ethanol is bad for engine, especially fuel systems.

From the amount of driving I do, and the several tanks of premium I've tried, there was still no improvement in mileage. And nothing noticeable in performance. I didn't dyno mind you, but I also don't race, or go to the track. For daily driving, there's no difference. So if there's no improvement in mileage, to me, it's a waste of money. For someone who likes racing in the streets or racing other cars, maybe they think it'll help them, although I don't see the point. Do you get a trophy? :jester:

That compares to a tune. Again, unless you're trying to shave off 1/10th of a second at the track, there's no practical reason for premium. At least not for normal driving.

I also don't think Ford would recommend 87 knowing that the engine would always be knocking and being retarded constantly. If that were the case, my engine would've blown a long time ago. You are spot on about any benefit being outweighed by the extra cost, although I've never had any improvements running premium. I've tried many times.

Hahaha, gotta catch me in your 5.SLOW first. Tell me how my 93 octane exhaust fumes smell!!!!

But FRFR, I'll spend less than $400 a year to fill up with 93 over 87 (assuming gas prices remain somewhat stable). Like another member said, it's all mental. We as humans love to have a little "piece of mind" and pay for it all the time. Very few of us go around and lead Spartan lives, calculating everything down to the smallest detail just to save a few cents. If running 93 makes an owner feel like they're doing something better for their truck and their own experience "proves" to them that it works, then great for them.
You do you, boo boo, and I'll keep doing what I want to do. And when we pass each other, we'll nod in agreement that we own the best damn truck our own hard earned money can buy!

I wonder if the 3K oil change crowd runs 93 in theirs or if they buy the cheapest non-Tier 1 gas they can find and complain about that. ;)

Anyone split the difference at 89? It’s what I put in my 5.0
