2017 3.5 ecoboost P0022
 
Threw a P0022 code yesterday morning on my way to work. 2017 xlt fx4. Truck is running normal nothing out of the ordinary other than the check engine light on. Found plenty of info about the old 5.4s but nothing on the 3.5 ecoboost. Code reads intake camshaft position timing - over retarded (bank 2). Wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what rememdied it Thanks

From the PC/ED Manual

P0022 – Intake Camshaft Position Timing – Over-Retarded (Bank-2)

Description:

This DTC sets when the VCT position is over-retarded. This DTC sets when the camshaft timing exceeds a maximum calibrated value or remains in a retarded position.

Possible Causes:

  • VCT unit to camshaft alignment
  • Camshaft timing incorrectly set
  • Continuous oil flow to the VCT piston chamber
  • Erratic camshaft position due to low oil pressure
  • Oil flow restriction in the oil passages or the VCT valve body
  • Variable Camshaft Timing Bank-2 Solenoid-1 (VCT21) valve stuck open
  • VCT21 circuit open
  • VCT21 circuit short to voltage
  • VCT21 circuit short to ground
  • VPWR circuit open
  • Camshaft advance mechanism binding (VCT unit)
  • Damaged VCT21 phaser
  • Damaged Camshaft Position Bank-2 Sensor-1 (CMP21)
  • CMP21 sensor circuits open
  • CMP21 sensor circuits short to voltage
  • CMP21 sensor circuits short to ground
  • Radio frequency interference

Diagnostic Aids:

This DTC may be accompanied by other DTCs. Diagnose all CMP DTCs first. If no CMP sensor related DTCs are present, continue to follow diagnosis for this DTC.
This DTC is a functional check of the VCT unit. Diagnose any base engine concerns related to the engine oil pressure or engine timing. Refer to the Workshop Manual Section 303-00, Engine System, Oil Pressure Test, to check the engine oil pressure. Refer to the Workshop Manual Section 303-01, Engine, to check the engine timing and VCT phasers.

My just did this monday. P0022. 74k on the clock. going to pull the valve cover this weekend and inspect the solenoid.

well so far so good. Replaced both solenoids this morning. The old #2 intake solenoid wasnt always working. Bench rested it and would only sometimes actuate with power applied. No signs of debris or reason for it sticking.
hopefully this might help someone down the road.

I have a similar problem. Same engine, 100K. Haven't had the CEL on at the right time to get the code. I'm hoping mine is the same code. I'll update as soon as I know.

Did you ever have the startup rattle ?

Mine did. Swapping out the solenoid so far has stopped it. I'll report back in a couple of days if it starts acting up again. Already put 60 miles and no issues yet.
