wait. what?
Make sure its not the DI you are hearing, its can be quite loud, sounds not quite like valve train noise,,

Not a Ford I know, but shows the sound before oil gets to the pump to shut it up

Tried to take a video this morning but the truck only sat for about 3 hours last night. I'm pretty sure that it's not the GDI - it sounds just like my 92 240sx did when the tensioner started to go bad. The sound typically lasts about 3-5 seconds until (I assume) some oil pressure builds and the tensioner takes up the slack in the chain. After that it sounds great.

Mine is '16 F150 so it's the prior generation 3.5L.
I switched oil from semi-synthetic to full synthetic and there's no more loud ticking noise at start up. Engine wasn't idling rough but it's very quiet now at idle and it has a better, no loud ticking start up.
Maybe switching to a full synthetic oil is all you need.

Just picked up my 2017 3.5EB this week, notice that first start up after its been sitting for 6-8 hours is a little rough...... then settles a little, then after about 30 seconds goes perfectly smooth. I'm assuming its just normal start up? I'll grab a video tomorrow and post it up, rather be safe then sorry.
