I see a lot of discussion about the known 3.5 EB startup timing chain rattle going back to the beginning, but I haven't seen much discussion about the rattle on 2017s with the refreshed motor. Does anyone have information about whether the issue should have been addressed with the updated motor? Our '17 (had it about 3 weeks) has a pretty wicked cold startup rattle, and it seems to have gotten worse over the past week. The weather here has been pretty temperate; it makes a lot of noise for about 4-5 seconds after sitting for the night when the weather has been about 50 degrees.

Is this typical?

Mine doesn't do it. But I've only had it a week.

Other than the high idle for a little bit on cold start, my 2017 3.5L EB sounds fine.

It is most noticeable first thing in the morning after sitting for the night (7-8 hours without being driven) but does do it to some extent if it sits for awhile during the day as well.

Sounds like your timing chains are messed up. Video it next time and then take it to Ford.

I had the timing chain rattle on my '07 5.4. I've got a 5.0 now so I don't have experience with the 3.5's specifically, but that's what the cause was on the 5.4. And knowing that the older 3.5's had issues with that, I'd lean towards it. Even if it isn't that, that gives the Ford techs the sound to begin looking into it.

My '15 3.5 eco has almost 30k miles. First start of the day, and every start, is always rattle free. What you are describing is for sure not normal. Please do post a video.

My transmission clunks sometimes shifting but I am not going to worry about it. Just drive it and it may sort itself out.

Make sure its not the DI you are hearing, its can be quite loud, sounds not quite like valve train noise,,


Not a Ford I know, but shows the sound before oil gets to the pump to shut it up
