Intake tube resonator. Someone try this for me lol. I’m getting so desperate with the same issue that I’ve paid for advice on this matter with justanswers.com. He mentioned resonator on intake tube which was an idea I had read across as of yet.

Interesting...so the SSM claims that the whine is due to the offset nature of the gearset. The gearset isn't offset. The pump is. My understanding of the 10R80 pump is that it's gear driven off the torque converter. So essentially, the whine is happening because the pump gears are not meshing properly. The only way to fix that is to pull the pump and replace it (and even then it probably won't fix the whine). I like how they say there are no long term durability concerns. 150K miles from now the teeth on that pump gear will be completely shot, if not sooner. Poor design.

Just in case anyone wants to know exactly what I'm talking about, here is a picture with the pump on and one with it off. Note the gear...which is connected to the input shaft. Typically, the pump is centered around the shaft...not offset.

Is there anyone lucky enough to have had the pump replaced? If so...did the noise go away?

I think everyone here is being a little bit too particular about this sound. It seems to be a very normal operating sound from the newer 5.0 engine. Added a magnaflow exhaust to mine and it stopped bothering me. The only time I hear the whine now is if I'm parked next to a building idling.

It's the transmission, not the engine making the noise.

Based on my research, I've only found one person that claimed to fix this whine noise (2018 Raptor). Per his video comments: "noise reduced 90-95% by replacing the transmission pump gears, pretty can’t hear anything the truck is nice and silent now." Interestingly enough, he said that they initially replaced the transmission pump itself, but this didn't correct the issue. I've seen Pump Assembly Alignment Kits for the 10r80 sold on ebay, and was thinking it was an alignment issue with the gears... Everyone else seems to accept it as "normal" now. I personally am more bothered by the higher pitched whine/squeal noise I have at low speed gear shifts. My theory on that noise is pump cavitation or fluid pressure pulsations or maybe it's related to the subject whine, but WTH do I know.

The OP for the above YouTube video also posted on a Raptor forum about this. He says the fix came from Ford Engineering.

This noise has nothing to do with the engine. It’s the transmission. that type of comment is basically telling people that you know better, suggests their concern is invalid, and it’s what Ford service people say when I bring my truck in for these types of problems and they just give a load of B.S. and run around.

Gear whine due to mesh on straight cut gears? I feel like that is absolutely the nature of a meshed straight cut gear set.

I guess it could be misaligned too far forward or back, or too far away, but that would ruin itself fast at that rate.

That's good information for everyone here. The idler gear itself inbetween the shaft and the pump (and not the pump gear) might actually be the culprit...although one is much more easily repaired than the other. I would second the alignment issue. If the whine was coming from the pump gear and the idler gear...I'm wonder if perhaps the pump is over-torqued pushing essentially putting more pressure on the contact points between the gears. The same could be true between the idler and input shaft. I definitely think alignment is what's causing the noise.

I don't disagree that a straight cut gear set is noisier simply by nature, however; in applications that demand durability, more precision is necessary to prevent excess wear. Ford can call it normal, or a characteristic and they aren't entirely wrong...but they also should not say it won't effect durability. It will. It's a horse**** design and Ford knows it. The meshing of the gears due to a straight cut should not be audible during operation...the fact that it is loud enough to hear during operation, is the problem.

Agreed.
