2017-2018 F-150 10R80 - Whine Noise ***SSM 47515***
SSM 47515 - 2017-2018 F-150, 2018 Expedition/Navigator, 2018-2019 Mustang – 10R80 - Whine Noise
Effective Sep 11 2018
Some 2017-2018 F-150, 2018 Expedition/Navigator, 2018-2019 Mustang vehicles equipped with a 10R80 transmission may exhibit a whine noise. This may occur at idle and while driving coming from the bell housing and front pan area of the transmission. The whine noise may become louder when at operating temperature and increases with higher engine RPM in the Park position. A small amount of whine noise is considered to be characteristic of the 10R80 transmission due to the offsetgear drivetrain in the front support and has no effect on durability.

Thanks for posting this SSM! Glad Ford finally said something about it at least.
So the NVH people at Ford were/are OK with the whine noise? SSM didn't mention the louder high pressure whine when it shifts gears, still wondering if that is normal too. People are staring at my new truck like it's going to explode. Starting to think I should sell it if this is normal...

I wonder why they wouldn't have included the cold start transmission rattle in this SSM? I have seen comments from an engineer explaining it was normal, so why won't Ford make it official?

I like to describe it as a jet engine sound, coupled with a whistle. No clicking or anything like that, at least not that I've noticed. Reverse is definitely more of a gear whine sound.

Definitely a whine/whistle/kazoo. When trans is cold, it's not that bad. Was really loud when pulling my camper in tow mode through a campground last wkd. Had to drive slow, and trans was keeping car in 1st @ high RPM, so it was just kinda stuck screaming until shifting into 2nd. BTW, I have the off-throttle rattle as well when engine is cold.
