I haven't used it but from my understanding phone calls still connect via bluetooth but everything else is done through usb.

The reason is actually quite simple. Power. I’m sure you’ve used Google Maps and Navigation before, you know it takes quite a bit of power to be used, especially when you’re on LTE or even HSPA+. It’s the same thing with Android Auto. The data flow from your phone to your car is quite heavy and drains the battery in your phone.
