2016(also 2015) Platinum SONY speaker upgrade
'16 Platinum Sony Radio Upgrade, some good info on these boards for upgrades.
nothing looks to have changed from 2015 with the addition of Sync 3.
Center channel is 3.5"
Front door 6" x 9"
Rear Doors 6.5"
fake engine noise for my 3.5 turned off at delivery by dealership.
1st and foremost, the stock Sony system is pretty good for MP3's. Waiting to complete upgrade to decide whether its worth it. I can tell a difference from my center channel upgrade thus far but not much from the rears. The SONY is horrid for Satellite radio. FM radio and satellite are much worse than my '10 f150 sony system and I will let my subscription expire once done and just stay with amazon music or one of the other music apps that can download music to your phone for high quality.
I decided to use the Reference X line 3005, 6502, 9603 as they are suppose to be higher sensitivity for the SONY stock radio head unit(need less power/no amp). Trying to avoid running an amp and all that involves. Also trying to keep this upgrade under $800.
Upgraded center channel in Infinity Reference X:

Took connector from the SONY 3.5" speaker and soldered wires onto new speaker. Speaker fit great, used 3 small metal washers under each tab and insulation that came with infinity speaker which all fit fine under SONY plate. First time soldering anything, watched a you tube video and went at it. Pretty easy to do with a cheap amazon kit. With these speakers the bigger post is the positive. You will need a 7mm socket(all doors) and a torx screwdriver set for center speaker.
Confirming that indeed the Metra 72-5602 is the correct connector for our vehicles for door speakers (not center speaker). For the rears, I cut the extra center two wires on the Metra, leaving one positive and one negative and clipped right into. The 6502 comes with a speaker adapter that is a perfect fit for our vehicle rear doors. I used the dynamat speaker kit to insulate around the hole.
Rear speaker upgrade can't tell much of a difference yet. Hoping for more once I add the front and sub upgrade.
Removing the door, I used you tube videos here for reference:
and
door removal isn't hard, used plastic panel tools ordered from amazon.
I have ordered speaker adapters for the front door from:
http://store.audiodesignscg.com/prod...aker-adapters/
expensive but I don't want to cut into old speakers and the ones that crutchfield ships are too thick for our trucks to put the panel back on ( you could use these if you made less thick-they are for the explorer). The audio design adapters haven't come in yet but when they do
will update with install.
Lastly planning to do the sub upgrade similar to this technique using dual voice coil Kicker 40CompRT81 (CWRT81), ordered a spacer ring from ebay to hopefully avoid having to melt the subwoofer box:

Fininished front and subwoofer
Bought custom adapters for front and subwoofer. I have an extra 3/4" adapter for subwoofer for $20+ shipping if anyone is interested private message me.
couple other lessons:
Check wiring diagram for positive and negatives. Reversed polarity on rear speakers and had to pop rear panels off again, found a diagram for a 2013(attached) which seems to still correlate.
The subwoofer is the Kicker 40CompRT81, the screws that come with it are perfect length for the 3/4" ring adapter. The subwoofer is too deep without adapter.
Picture attached of the Crutchfield adapters for the front which are too deep. The custom adapters worked well but were $$$. In hindsight I would choose to use remove factory adapters from installed speakers.

How's the sound dying to know. I have a 16 platinum with the song system. I hate the sound with a passion. I want to upgrade everything including amp but I read somewhere that if I replace the amp I will have trouble with the radio

Here's a link where there's a graph of it being RTA'd. A component set would be a much better choice and a 6 1/2" (round) speaker sounds a lot better than a 6x9"
