Default 2015 Sony Sub Box exposed!

Hi! I notice a lot of questions regarding the 2015 Sub box so I thought I would post some pics and thoughts about the new setup.

It was tricky and I had no Idea it was even possible but I found out how to flip down the back seats.

Step 1: Start with back seat up head rest down.

Step 2: Reach in behind the head rest and lift up the tiny little metal cylinder on the latch on the seat side.

Step 3: Lower the rear seat using the unlock handle on the bottom of the rear seat.

So there it is! It is an 8" sub like the last one and the 700W Sony amp appears to be about the same. I love the fact that the floor is flat all the way through well worth a sacrifice in bass, IMO, but the system overall sounds bad. The kicker setup probably offers a great compromise solution but I couldn't find any in my area. Kicker doesn't sell them on their store yet either.

As far as upgrades go an installer said he would be confident he could construct a small sealed 10" box for a shallow mount sub for the same space. There could have been more but the power mechanism for the sliding rear window and the middle seat belt was in the way. There is a hell of a lot of space behind the jack and if you remove the jack you could probably fit a 12" box for a shallow mount sub of good volume but there are some brackets and mounts that may get in the way so the space above the jack is for amps and the current amp and sub box gets replaced with a bigger and better one. BUT! If you want the factory Sync, like me, the Sony amp has to stay. It can be relocated to over by the jack or probably in the storage space under the seat but it needs a new home.

I'm not sure if its all worth it yet and I hate changing a brand new vehicle but I do love good sounding music.

Just for everyones FYI the front speakers in the 15's are 6x9's now and the rear doors are 5.25's. The actual cutout in the rear doors are big enough to fit 6.5's but not sure how deep of a speaker will work. I just bought a '15 screw with the sony system. It's good enough to where I'm not "This sucks i have to rip everything right now". I definately have plans for the future, like new 6x9 comps for the front. A great set of 6.5 focal comps from a previous install. Either 2 really good 8" subs or 4 8" that are just above average. Anyways, just wanted to throw that out there. Side note: I work at the Kansas City plant so I get to see these everyday...

So, are you saying that the components are the same as say a 13' or 14' but the new sub location makes for as good sound or are there other differences ? I think my 13' is pretty decent overall with good strong bass. Hardly perfect but pretty decent.

I'm comparing it to my 2010 I guess. It did have better bass. My friends 2011-2014 with MFT had better bass too but the sound was poor.
As for the components I didn't look at them but I think they are the same 6x8" in doors + 1" tweet in the a-pillars and 6x8 co-ax in the rear, please correct me if i'm wrong. The stereo sounds like everything is on the satellite radio channel. Sometimes its hard to tell what kind of instrument is playing. On top of that there is little bass, the box and sub combo must be different than the previous years.

You might want to try the poly fill mod some of us did on the old model to the sub. It gave mine a little more punch.

Can you provide a link or comment further?

Its pretty simple you unbolt the sub and add a loose poly fill material, like a fiber glass or heck sawdust, and then bolt it back up. I'm not sure why or how it works but many report better bass. In my case it probably wont bring it back to the 2014 model and the stereo will still sound like a factory head unit but it may help those who want a lil better bass.

You can get the poly fill at a craft store such as Hobby Lobby. I plan on trying some in my sub enclosure to see if it helps.

Couldn't you just use the Sony amp to power a better compact sub? Like the JL in my signature?

What you are describing sounds like my first truck. It sounded like a cover band instead of the original. It had a bad part. I can not stress enough that you may have a bad part causing the poor sound quality. My new truck sounds good but just not as much bass as the 2012.
