Reread it. Doesn't say Ford says it but it must be speculation.

What does this mean? standard cab, 2x4, with heavy payload? It is a bit ambiguous.

That is NOT an increase from the BOSS 302 (444 hp) engine from years ago. The trucks will never match the Mustangs due to a number of reasons.

Furthermore, the 3.5L seems to be the same HP/liter as the outgoing 3.7L. I don't feel like doing math now, but they are pretty close.

The 2.7L is a beast. Basically a 5.4 3v in a lightweight frame.

Or...add direct injection (GDI) and/or turbocharge it.

That number has been speculated by the media since early 2014 and certainly would be a reasonable strategic objective by Ford.

.
that's what I mean. overstressed potentially problematic engines are the future of f150s it appears. direct injection would be a nice touch though.

"No way the 2.7 ecoboost will match up to this engine and what it is capable of. Might get good mpg but that is it."

From ecodiesel thread:

I like how they're saying the ecoboost was good then it got problems that'll happen with a new engine I bet it happens to the ecodiesel then lets see what they say

The new 2.7L engine is a 1st generation iteration of an engine that mitigates the "overstressed" issue of turbocharging small displacement engines; it does that largely through the tech of compacted graphite iron (CGI) blocks. It is likely that many folks underappreciate what CGI contributes to making an engine less loaded aka 'stressful' and why CGI blocks are so common in diesel, IndyCar, NASCAR, and Pro-Stock engines. It's because CGI has 2X the fatigue limit of grey iron, 75% greater tensile strength, & 40% more elastic modulus leading to less distortion of cylinder bores with a reduction of piston slap, bore wear, oil consumption, blow-by, and reduced ring tension/friction.

Ford is far and away ahead of domestic competition with the intro of the 2.7L CGI/GDI/turbocharged engine into mainstream mass production.

interesting, wasn't aware they were using CGI. I partially withdraw my previous comment. very interested to see how these engines do. still, I won't be screwing around with turbos and if I buy a next gen F-150 I will only buy a 5.0.
