Why would anyone think that adding weight to your truck is going to save fuel. The aerodynamics of a truck design is made so that the air flow over the cab flows smoothly over the tailgate. That is one reason why something like an empty soda can doesn't fly out the back while driving.

While it is true the manufactures have improved the aero attributes of pickup trucks, it is far from optimal give the open box/bed.
The soda can not flying is more chance than design.
A simple wind tunnel experiment you can perform to show you actual airflow over cab/bed/tailgate- spread evenly approx. 1/4 to 1/2 inch cement powder or flour across bed. Then drive, gradually accelerate to highway speed. Keep your eye in rear view mirror and or have friend watching. I do not want spoil surprise. Please tell us your results.
If your premise was so, America’s highways would have a tremendous reduction in roadside litter. I watch trash, soda cans, and plenty more blow out of pickup trucks on a daily basis.

what do you do with the top when your driving place to place?

It has to be stored at home or in a safe place. If the cargo you are hauling will fit into a cab high space, you can raise the roof and lower Jeep top like fabric sides and rear hatch. This is the camper mode of the aero cap and you can drive at freeway speed with it in this mode all day long.

We here in the US are spoiled compared to what the rest of the world pays for fuel, except some countries like Saudi Arabia.

How is the fuel economy like with the top up like that?

Poor. You take a hit because the low pressure region is increased behind the pickup truck aka aerodynamic drag.

An easy reduction of 10%+ in fuel efficiency. Square back caps cause the same thing and you can't configure them in a sloped back shape like you can the aero cap.

Lets keep this factual before the tin foil hat crowd shows up spouting BS about the car and oil industries being in bed together and buying out the guy that invented the "100 MPG carb". Or GM's electric car experiment in California that was killed off because the cars were "too good".
no i was implying that even modern engines (although generally more efficient than their older counterparts) are still very inefficient.

the problem with the current combustion engine is that the design hasn't changed that much over the years. yada yada i know about the efi, variable valve timing, direct injection and all the other crap that has changed. it has helped, but its been minor improvements at best and the core design stays the same.

im pretty sure it would take a radical redesign of the entire
engine to make any major improvements in the area of efficiency. just my 2 cents. as to what the design might be and as to whether anyone has come up with that design i can't say.

Did you hear about Volvo's flywheel motor design? I think that's a step in the right direction.

How's the view out the back when the top is down?

Before you talk to any auto manufacturers like Ford or cap companies like Leer, you should probably patent your idea.

The prototypes have a small window and rearward visibility is restricted but adequate. Here is a picture of a photo shopped image which shows the bigger window of a production model which will have much better rear visibility.

As far as patenting the idea, I already have.
