Did you make sure all the O-rings were in place?

the 2.7 uses the cartridge filter on top of the engine. As the previous OP stated, you must replace ALL the o-rings included with the new filter, and make sure you tighten it back with the correct socket..
perhaps you pinched one of the o-rings?

2.7 Oil Change Problem
This is confusing to me. There is really no way to know the oil level within the oil filter housing after the lid is replaced. And if you remove the lid (the filter comes out with the lid), the oil will immediately drain from the oil filter housing because you have removed the filter and o-ring check valve.
So, how do you know that the oil drains immediately after the oil change? I think the only way to know would be to see a change in the oil level after you had waited the 15 minutes for all the oil to drain down after the initial 6 quart fill and then see the level increase. Is this what happened?
Just curious,
Dave

OP simply just does not give enough information on the issue on his FIRST post....

I’m betting on the o rings. There are 3 o rings. The smallest o ring does require some effort. A pick is helpful. Make sure all the o rings are lubed with oil and seated correctly. Tighten to 18/24lb ft (should be printed on the filter housing).

Defective engine.
A known 2.7 problem.
I changed the oil in my 2.7 last night and that darn filter/housing let the darn oil drain back into the crankcase in about 30 minutes. I determined that because I spent 45 minutes checking the crankcase oil level and it quit rising after 30 minutes. To add to the drama I actually used 5w30 Motorcraft semi/syn.....again....and plan on running it at least 7500 miles....again.
I'd sell it.
I like living on the edge so I'm keeping mine........

so let's verify something.
The oil leaked out and down the front of the engine, or into the sump. because it will drain to the sump over time.
leaking out of the case and all over the engine bay - bad day.
as said you might have missed a ring. Equally problematic - one of the bottom rings coming out of the groove (land) and riding on the threads of the housing. If it was hard to turn in those first 4 turns - it might have been slipped out of joint.
so I was gently take it off again - and then reset it after checking the rings. I always keep the last set of rings on the workbench till I have the oil change complete and tested for leaks. Incase I need one again.

OP has never returned to comment further (his first post at that).
