I was going on what he had told me.... just looked up the charts and your right he is full of

Because the 2.7 hits that sweet spot of fuel economy and pretty darn good power. The only reason I'm looking at getting one is BECAUSE of the performance it offers, and still gives decent efficiency. I'm sure that's why most on here have bought it. If the 2.7 wasn't offered, I'm sure most people would opt for the 5.0 or 3.5eco over the 3.5NA.

Well stated - I fully agree!

Yep, I chose it because it offers good MPG and very good performance for the MPG, plus more tune potential down the road. I like that it has a lot of new technology and compacted graphite iron block.

Apparently it has a plastic oil pan though, so down the road I wonder if that will need to be replaced. I've had a few old trucks with plastic power steering reservoirs that caused problems so I don't know about the oil pan.

I understand what you're saying. But don't you think tuning a 2.7 above it's capabilities than what FORD has spec'd out will cause premature failure of parts unlike if you opt'd for a motor that can handle the expected performance?

Yeah, it probably would, if you regularly ran it at max capacity with the tune.

I don't know much about tuning but I think there is potential to increase MPG by optimizing the engine load vs engine RPM, and reducing use of the turbo to only when it is really needed.

There is an optimal level of engine load to use when accelerating - not sure what it is but the Scan Tool supposedly can determine it, I was thinking about getting one and maybe a customizable tuner to experiment MPG-wise.

The performance stuff is already out there but I am curious.

I hear ya. I'm all about tuning..trust me. I love taking things to the brink of failure and I have with my other cars. My 997TT is pushing 842HP to all 4 wheels and my GTR is right up there. But those motors were built for that. The 2.7..eh..not sure. I'm curious as well. If there is documented and reliable data that these motors can handle it and has for a significant amount of time, sign me the hell up! Next year I'm dropping in a nice intake and a MBRP side exhaust. Probably by that time, they will be more documented and proven cases that a tune on the 2.7 can handle it and IS reliable.

Just to add, it won't be for too long before someone develops a stroker kit for this motor. Imagine..stroked and boosted! Glorious!

If you can afford to own and modify those cars, are you that worried about replacing an engine in the truck if it doesn't hold up though?

No not really. And thats because of two things:
1.) Factory Warranty and extended drive train warranty
2.) Magnusnn Moss Act

In the end, those cars were built for that sort of thing. The 2.7 is relatively new and hasn't been really proven...yet but I have all faith in the industry that all the bugs, if any will be vetted and whats left is going to be a tried and true motor.

I have a 2015 crew cab Lariat with 8,000 miles and I have no regrets with my 2.7 and I'm very pleased so far with my gas mileage as well.
