1st oil change on 2.7L - Dealer necessary?
#21
You don't necessarily have to have the oil change done at the dealer. But definitely skip the "Jiffy Lube" type places.
Perhaps find somewhere in between. Perhaps an independent shop.

Got on to the Ford site and registered the truck and have a free oil change and $10.00 to used on future visits. Do all of service at a Ford dealership so when the vehicle is in need of service or traded in ALL the records are available and that cuts out the guess work and questions. PS if it is a Ford dummy that screws it up it is Fords problem. No No No to any quick lubes.

I think ks54703 has the right idea. I have all work done at a Ford dealer, if they screw it up they can't blame anyone else. Never trusted quicky lubes but my out of warranty GMC goes to Firestone, they have always been straight with me, at least my local one.

I asked dealer if they were willing to let the oil drain for fifteen minutes. Service manager said, "Why would they want to do that?" I pointed out that the 2.7 needed that time to totally drain and mentioned there was a TSB regarding the subject. He was unaware of it, but took my phone number. Got a call on my way home, the service manager thanked me for making him aware of the situation. He stated that they would probably not want to let a vehicle sit in their stall for fifteen minutes while the oil drains. Then stated Ford requires 5 minutes for engine to drain, as filter and filler cap have been removed, allowing oil to properly drain more freely.
I used to change my own oil, and after reading, on this forum, about how easy the 2.7 is to change, I ordered filters, drain pan, socket for filter. I have done it twice since purchasing my truck, and it is indeed the easiest change I've ever done. I did monitor the oil draining out and I can tell you, I don't think five minutes is anywhere near enough and fifteen minutes is questionable. I noticed a very thin, but steady, stream for more than fifteen minutes.
For those not sure about changing their own oil, there are some good videos on YouTube describing the process.

I can go get it done for free from the dealership I bought my truck from but after their carelessness ended up breaking trim pieces and components in the interior of the truck on three separate occasions I think I will do it myself or at least drive out of my way to avoid them at all costs.

I'd stay away from the Quicky Oil Change places. Who knows what kind of crappy filters and bulk oil they use in addition to the correct procedure as mentioned.
If you change your own oil you get to choose the oil brand, viscosity and filter.
I use WIX or NAPA filters on all my vehicles.

Does anyone have a copy of the actual procedure for the 2.7 or a copy of the TSB mentioned above? It's not outlined in the manual and this is the second time the dealer has overfilled my oil (in 2 oil changes). I warned them this time and they still overfilled it. Wanting something physical to prove to them they're doing it wrong and not letting all the oil drain. It's not a little over, it's up over the twist on the dipstick. I searched but didn't have any luck. Thanks in advance.
Here' the text.
Special Service Memo (SSM #45425) - 2015-2016 F-150, 2016 MKX And 2015 Edge - 2.7L - Appear To Have Low Oil Level
Some 2015-2016 F-150, 2016 MKX and 2015 Edge vehicles equipped with a 2.7L engine may appear to have low engine oil level if the proper procedures are not followed.
Refer to the Owners Guide, Maintenance, Engine oil check section.
When checking the engine oil level after shutting off the engine wait at least 15 minutes prior to checking in order to allow the oil to drain back to the oil pan. The engine oil level can be checked immediately if the engine has not been started.
When changing the engine oil, the engine needs to be at normal operating temperature and the oil filter removed before draining the oil. Allow the oil pan to drain completely for up to 5 minutes.
Check oil level after filling by following the oil level check procedure

My bad. Not a TSB, but something from Ford, regarding this very important matter. It's hard to imagine any 'quick' oil change place wanting to give the appropriate amount of time! Kind of a bummer for those not wanting to change their own oil.
I wonder if those that have been overfilled have been because the engine has not been allowed to drain long enough, or because they are unaware that it takes 15 minutes for the oil to drain down into the pan, and are adding until the dipstick shows full? Either scenario is a little scary, I think.

I just changed the oil in my 2017 F-150 5.0. She's at 1k miles. It was the first oil change I've ever done in my life.
I'll just leave you with this.......The hardest part was getting under the truck. It's that easy.

And, you would find that changing the oil/filter of a 2.7 Ecoboost engine (the subject of this thread) would be even easier.
