Just picked it up and it made the noise before I made it out of the parking lot!
it was in for 15 days, and I told them and showed them the problem still existed before I left. They did all phasers and both tensioners as well as cams. The mechanic came out and didn't even know what the sound was, and he was the one working on the truck. Pretty frustrating!

No wonder some people don't get ahead in life...

Guess they are getting with ford, and im going to call ford aswell, this issue shouldn't exist on a 50k truck with 3-6k miles on it. I bought a 4runner with 175k miles on it and haven't had a single issue with it. This truck is kinda disheartening

I feel your pain! I bought my Ford because everyone says how good they are and I have already had three problems, two of which are major! I love the power and truck in general, but if the dealer offered to buy it back I would give them the keys right now. Keep us up to date!

Hey just chiming in to say I've got the same issue with my 2018. I've had it in the dealership once to get it checked out and they had acknowledged the noise and say its coming from the Cam phasers. Ford replied to the dealership with the answer that it is a normal characteristic of the truck. So I went back because I cannot accept that answer and went out to the lot with the service manager and we started 2 brand new trucks and neither of them made the noise. So now I've got an appointment for Tuesday morning; and I will update with what the outcome is. Not very confident that the issue will be resolved but aleast have to try. I traded in a 2016 f150 with an incurable vibration, so needless to say I am very dissapointed with Ford at this point.

So I went by the dealer last night after work and when I got there the tech was on the phone with Ford about the issue. I was in his office while he talked to them, and they had instructed him to unplug the vct solenoids and scan the phaser positions with his tool to see if there was any variation between any of the phasers of more than 1 degree. So I went out with him for a drive while he had everything hooked up, and verified that the noise was gone when the vcts are unplugged and there is no variation in phaser position. He had to send that info back to Ford now so I'm expecting a call today or tomorrow on what the next steps are going to be. Obviously it is the Cam phasers making the noise, but he thinks that it is likely a programming issue and not a physical defect on the phasers themselves.

They are the gears that are attached to the ends of the camshafts that are driven by the timing chain. Their job is to adjust valve timing by advancing or retarding the camshaft position. Older engines used to have a solid Cam gear, where as newer engines have these phasers that are two piece gears that rotate within themselves . The timing chain rotates at the same speed yet the cams can be adjusted with the phasers. Hopefully that makes sense
