It is without a doubt the engine and related to cam timing. I do also have a tranny rattle on startup though haha. That noise is likely the pump that keeps line pressure during auto start/stop.

On separate news, I really don't know if replacing the VCT's, timing chains, and cam phasers will fix the problem or if it relates to other issues such as undersized or clogged oil passages that the VCT's are supposed to feed pressurized oil to the cam phasers. This could all originate from a bad batch of engine blocks/heads.
Exactly , I don't believe the problem is the parts themselves but the oil delivery to the parts. The tech that was working on my truck said the same thing. Btw we disconnected my vcts and noise went away; which is because the cam gear becomes solid at that point and the internals of the phaser are not banging off eachother. Also when one vct was unplugged the 3 remaining vcts default to lock the phasers so you can't even pinpoint an individual vct/phaser because they all go dead.

They told me it was a wastegate actuator. Not sure if that is the same thing being referenced above. They changed mine and it sounds better but a slight faint rattle still. Definitely quieter though

Quick update. The dealer is back in contact with Ford engineers about the rattle. It would seem they recognize an issue but don't know the cause or fix. Probably won't hear anything until next week.

On a separate note, do you guys know what terms Ford usually offers on a buy back? It is looking like that may be a viable option, but it would all depend on their terms. Do they usually off full paid price plus taxes? I also leveled my truck with rear blocks and Bilstein shocks and struts, tinted windows... Any chance they will give a credit for that stuff? Mileage deduction? Thanks!

they will pay you what is owed all tax and license, all payments including your down. Gotta pull aftermarket stuff off but my buddy was able to get them to credit the cost of the window tint and clear bra.

question is do you get another F150 but a 5.0 this time? Heard they also give you a good discount on a new Ford too.

I wouldn't bother with a 5.0 they rattle too, and have the same transmission issues as the eco boost. I picked up my f250 last week and couldn't be happier. I can honestly say there is not a thing wrong with it. I realize not everyone wants to drive an f250 but I would recommend it to anyone as a consideration. No electric steering, no auto start/stop, plain old smooth shifting 6 speed, more power than is ever needed and still get 18-19 mpg (that is with the 6.7l diesel).

I've thought hard on that too, but it's just way more truck than I need. The reason I want to stay with an f150 is the aftermarket parts I already have and the poor crash ratings of the competition. Tundra would be my next choice if it had some new tech but it's just so dated

Does that sound happen when your transmission shifts?

You guys are confusing the different rattles the F150 3.5 Eco has.

1- 10 speed rattle at startup

2- Wastegate actuator ratlle that mostly happens at startup

3- Rattle that happens when letting of throtte and normally cold engine, comes from phasers and/or VCT... This is the one we are trying to discuss here and apparently ford cant fix!
