I too had this experience of not being able to remove the gate. The answer is the "torsion bar lift assist". I'm told it comes on tailgate step models.

Same here, never did get the drivers side out. Just put a folding table there with a few old towels on it, set the passenger side on it. All you need is a few inches to work with anyway.

Not sure whats in that left side hinge cup, but it was NOT letting loose.

My 2015 is the same - had my neighbor come over to give me a hand - followed the directions in the manual, had the passenger side off and tilted it to 80 degrees to remove the driver's side......yeah......no. And I had already removed the tailgate assist which is on mine which was simply two bolts on the passenger side......couldn't find any videos on it either.
