I did the same to mine today. I just used a utility knife and scored it along the contour, over and over until the blade punched through. Looks great and only took 20 minutes or so.

I had originally pulled mine off as well, mainly because I couldn't squeeze under the truck to do an oil change because the flap hung down so low. I also took a razor knife to mine, followed by smoothing off the cut edges on my bench grinder. I trimmed a lot more off than the other pictures I've seen.
