I've had 7 ford trucks 5 new since 1990 and ( happy with all of them )with most recent used 19 150 lariat with 17k on it . At first i loved the truck but as the trans has taken a crap 80k miles ,not so much now . I took it to a local trans shop for full rebuild (he does 2 or 3 ford dealerships trans work. He quoted me $3500 for full rebuild with updated parts . I did consider going through ford and trying for their loyalty program but didn't feel like waiting and taking a chance on $8k and them saying no. I don't know how long I'll keep the truck after i get it back. I have the 3.5 eco and don't know about the turbos going out too . I will say my 15 lariat seemed like it was made better than this 19 for sure . I am considering Chevy gmc if i trade it but they have issues also . It seems like quality has taken a crap these last 5 years for all trucks

Default New rear main seal and totally rebuilt tranny.... cost = $0

THIS SHOULD BE A STICKY THREAD!!!!!

I have a fantastic Service Adviser.
.... when I had my 2020 in for Oil Change etc. at 44K miles, they noted a leak at rear main. I had also been having clunky tranny shifts for some time. I researched and found that the CDF Drum Bearing is the culprit and replacing the original with the re-designed drum almost always cures the hard shift issue…… the bearing slips on the original unit. This is all fixed/covered under TSB 23-2250 if under original B2B powertrain warranty!!! Just had all that done (they had the vehicle for 2 1/2 days) and cost was $0!!!!

(See PDF attachment)
And, this video graphically explains the problem/solution…..

I am a very happy camper and I DO have a 100K mile Ford ESP, but the B2B is the real way to go.... shifting smooth as silk now.... just like my 2015 C7 Vette..... smile…. AZPLAT

Default 2018 5.0 10R80 Died at 79K under light towing

My 2018 F-150 Lariat 5.0 started spewing Tranny fluid all over when towing my Motorcycle from Florida to Chattanooga TN. The symptoms were the tranny started slipping and the wrench I icon light came on. I limped it in to a local reputable transmission repair facility in Chattanooga. Tranny needs a complete rebuild at for $6800 including labor. I mentioned a new OEM 10R80 would cost ~$7000 they mentioned yes and you will get the same OEM parts that failed in it. They mentioned that when they rebuild the high failure parts are replaced with heavy duty after market ones. It is warrantied for 2 years. I think I am going to go this way. Ford needs to get there act together on these transmissions. They have had 7 years to fix the issues and are stalling.

You truly do have a fantastic service advisor. I'm picking mine up for the same thing today after 61 days. Original service advisor said it would get a complete transmission, but in the end, they tried a valve body and then the CDF. Pretty frustrating that they took over one week to diagnose, then wait for warranty approval, then order parts for the valve body. Once the parts came in, then the vehicle goes back into the scheduling line. Once the valve body went in , the whole process was repeated only with a CDF. Hoping this ends up working.

The CDF drum is beginning to fail on mine. The last few months I've noticed some harder shifting into 6th. Took it to the dealership where I have it serviced, they performed an update which made it better for 1/2 a day, which they warned me that it probably wasnt going to fix it and that it was likely the CDF drum. Unfortunately, I'm 8000 miles past my warranty at 68000 miles, so I'm kind of boned.

It turns out that the dealership I bought it from gave me a free 100,000 mile aftermarket extended powertrain warranty, but that dealership is a few hours away, and my local FORD dealership wont deal with aftermarket warranty companies becuase they have too much trouble getting paid. I understand their position, but I'm either going to have to pay out of pocket and hope I can get reimbursed or I'm SOL. My options are trade it before it gets worse or take the risk of being out $5K-$10K or whatever it costs to repair the stupid thing.

A bit frustrating.

Or you could take it to the dealer that is a "few hours away" I am used to a dealer that is a few hours away (mine is 250 miles from me). I fixed the small issues that should have been covered under warranty, but a 16-hour CDF plus parts? That's worth a trip to the purchasing dealership even if you get a rental car or trailer your F150 there.

That is a possibility for sure.

Afternoon Rae,
I'm reaching out to get an update to verify if you were able to talk to my Service Advisor (James Rubio) 480-621-3757 about the open case: CXH-02232886. I called my advisor James earlier and left a VM stating you were going to reach out to him for repair detail info + cost. I also left the Service Manager (Michael Peek) a VM to inform him if the open Case #. Please let me know if you need any more info on my end to determine financial assistance.

FYI: I'd like to mention I took extreme care of my truck, always performing routine maintenance w/Ford every 5-6months and none of these issues were detected during standard inspections (under warranty). I don't drive aggressively and have never taken my truck off-roading. If you look online there are multiple TSBs for both issues I currently have. This tells me these are known defective parts from the manufacturer. I can't stress enough to PLEASE help w/financial assistance for these repairs as I feel I'm being punished for taking care of my vehicle when in doubt this is a known issue w/Ford for defective 10R80 transmissions + defective Cam Phasers. I honestly feel both these issues are Warranty-Able due to if this was last year all this would be covered under factory warranty (Powertrain / 5Yr / 60,000mi).

PLEASE HELP!

Also, I did a CarFax to confirm the mileage of my 2018 F150 when I purchased it in 8/2019 (13,423mi)
  • Ford F150 MFG Date: 8/2018
  • My purchase date: 8/2019 (13,423 mi)
San Tan Ford Dealer Diagnosis Replacement Cost:
  • 10R80 Transmission Replacement: $10k
  • Cam Phasers Replacement: $4k
Do you have any updates on this?

My 18 is having some of the same shifting issues so dealership reset the TCM and adaptive learning patterns however it didn't completely resolve it. My truck only has 40k miles so very similar to yours. Unbelievable this happens just one year past the warranty.

Hi there. Go ahead and send us a private message with your VIN and the name and location of your Ford dealer, and I’ll look into this shifting concern.

i wouldn’t hold your breath on a viable solution. I paid out of pocket to get my TCM flashed, which honestly made things worst. At the time the dealership told me I was out of warranty, later found out that was false. Worst problems happened on road trips with the transmission bucking which was scary as it was winter time and roads were slick. Paid out of pocket for a new main body valve, problem happened again with bucking, weird shifts going from 10 to 1, pulled over, there was transmission oil spray everywhere, took it to dealership, had to pay again to have it looked at and said nothing wrong, maybe oil was slightly high. I’ve given up on any hope with this truck. It makes me so sad and frustrated for the amount of money I spent and ford won’t honour fixing a know issue because I’m out of warranty. A 2018 with 136000km that has never towed in its life, never off road, never driven agressive is pathetic to have such a poor transmission performance. Been living with this for the last 36000km. I pray for a recall.
