Also having this issue. I do have a factory extended warranty. Got word today that Ford will swap the transmission. As others have gotten a replacement (hopefully under warranty) did Ford fix this? Or will I have same issue again?

Default 10r80 issues

2018 Ford F150 3.5l eb 3.55 rear end Max tow 85k miles

I've run into massive issues with my tran. Hard shift into 3rd, 5th, slips out and let's rpms rev, pause then slips into next gear for 6-10. Talked to a Ford team guy, he said without a doubt bushing in the CDF clutch. It's been recommended to buy a refurbished 10r80 from Ford... In MN parts and labor $7800.

My question, who has any experience with Jasper rebuilds? As good, better, worse than Fords?

Needless to say, this sucks, but c'est la vie.

are you saying you had the clutch drum replaced twice? once at 45 and again at 61?

Default 2018 f-150

Hey,

Just made an account so I could also post about this. I bought a 2018 F-150 5.0 a little over 4 years ago. It had 24K miles on it when I purchased it, it now has a little over 70K miles on it. It's completely stock. I do not tow or haul anything. I drive to work and back with it, we sometimes haul stuff with a trailer when doing home things. garbage, rocks for the boulevard once light things of that nature. The other day I was driving it and the RPM's shot up and it lost drive. Wrench icon came up and then said check owners manual. Towed it to Ford they said code's are coming from things they would expect to see with a totaled trans loss. I asked for a estimate and they quoted $7100 for a whole new trans. I'm obviously out of warranty so I called Ford Customer Service as I know they can help with expenses if your vehicle is under 7 years 100K miles. Ford corporate said it could and would be willing to help but that I would need to find the exact issue, meaning I would have to pay ford to remove the oil pan to check for metal and that cost is around $400. I called a few places around here for quotes only 1 got back to me. They said they only had a used option available with 60K miles on it, I laughed when they said $7300. I had ford remove the oil pan, they said excessive amount of fine metal in the pan, they said it was most likely from the CDF Drum - Front Pump. I called Ford corporate back and left a message with that info. I'm now waiting for Ford to call back with if it's considered "Warranty-able" issue. They said if it was they would adjust the man hours to Warranty rate which could cut 1-2 thousand off the top of the cost and that they would then cover 40% to 70% of the entire cost of the repair possibly. The cost for taking the oil pan off is not something they could cover or reduce as that's a diagnostic fee. As of this moment still waiting to hear back from Ford.

In the past I've experienced very large CLUNK when going from park into reverse. I've also noticed when driving the gear swaps seem to have a hickup feeling usually within the first 3-4 gears the entire truck jerks. I've noticed when going down hills its not really shifting, RPM's are high as my foot is off the petal.

I will update as I go with this.

Should I ask for the old transmission for scrap metal value to get something out of it? Any specific paperwork I should ask for?

Besides this issue I also have the oil consumption issue with this ford. I do have to add oil quite often and I check the oil every time I fill and I wait till its a quart low which is the bottom hole of the factory oil stick, I do not have the longer stick like some do. Do I get this repaired and then trade in on something?

Thanks!

Sorry to hear this. You’re not alone as you can tell. Couple of things…

1. Same as you, when my tranny crapped out I took it to a dealer, who advised it was damaged (no specifics as they didn’t open it). Options were either a rebuild at the dealer for about $7K CAD or a remanufactured for about $10.5K CAD. I opted for the reman as it came with a 3 year unlimited warranty whereas the rebuild was good for 90 days. I advised the dealer that I would like to request some goodwill from Ford to cover part of the cost and they took it from there, dealing directly with Ford Corporate on my behalf. Maybe it’s different in Canada, or I got lucky and had a nice dealer, but I find it curious that’s it’s you that has to deal with Corporate when it’s only your dealer who can provide the answers. Seems pretty inefficient. Have you asked the dealer to deal direct with Corporate on your behalf? If you have then I guess it is what it is. That must be such a pain in the butt. Either way, it’s worth is as they covered 65%. Still mad my tranny crapped out but $3500 is better than $10.5K

2. If you get a new or remanufactured tranny, there will most likely be a core charge which is only covered if the old tranny is returned to be remanufactured, scrapped, etc. If you keep it, you’ll be on the hook for the core charge. I think mine was around $1500 CAD or something like that.

Good luck and I look forward to reading your updates.

The lady I spoke with at the ford corporate office asked what dealership and who I was talking to about the issue. When I told her that I hadn't payed for them to remove the oil pan she said that I would need to do that in order for their assistance. At that point I think she was going to contact the dealership but I was happy with relaying information as I felt I would be more on-top of contacting both parties then they would. Maybe I'm wrong with that but I don't mind the back and forth. My dealership does not fix transmissions at all, they would be getting a re-manned one from a supplier is what they said.

I spoke with the dealership a minute or two ago and asked specifically about the CDF Drum and if the new one would have the updated CDF Drum that fixes this issue. He said he could not be 100% sure but he said that the part number is a superseded number which means it's been changed from the original. Looking this up it appears last year Ford actually did a design change on the CDF Drum to stop this issue from happening.

I wish I had known about this issue earlier to possibly fix it while I had issues when it was under warranty but it is what it is.

Yah from what I understand there is a sleeve or bushing in the CDF drum that moves and covers an oil gallery or two that provides oil to the clutch mechanism restricting oil flow causing awkward shifts... The new CDF drum has an updated sleeve/bushing that has a lip in it now that prevents it from slipping. Here's the youtube video I found very interesting on the issue.. There are newer TSB's out from this video though.
