Default 04 Lariat or 17 XL

Trying to decide which is the better investment the Lariat is loaded in great shape and 8,700 less than the 17 XL which is also pretty well dressed. Over 5 years I want to make the best investment and to enhance my portfolio.

Enhance your portfolio? XL is gonna break down less because of zero miles. And gotta consider motor. 5.4L is garbage.

You're comparing two completely different vehicles with a massive age, equipment, and price gap. Mass produced cars are rarely, if ever, an investment. No matter what you buy, it will lose value by the minute. The older Lariat may be cheaper now, but it undoubtedly has much higher mileage and will easily become a money pit for repairs. If you're looking at a new regular cab XL and an older crew cab Lariat, that suggests you either don't know what you want or you're trying to stretch a budget not capable of covering a vehicle like this. My recommendation is to buy a used truck that's maybe 3 years old and reasonably equipped with somewhat low mileage. You should be able to get into the low 20's if you go XLT.

The XL is pretty advanced technologically and if I can get it for 800-1000 below MRSP i might take the plunge to new, although the prestige of a Lariat is tempting.

If you buy new at least go for the XLT. Many times you can actually find an XLT cheaper brand new because they usually get the best incentives. Also the resale on an XL is going to be pretty bad, let alone a regular cab XL.

Both of these trucks are terrible "investments"

Your best bet financially short term and long term would probably be to find a well cared for 2012 or 2013 f150 xlt. 5.0 engine, crew cab, 4x4.

The 5.4L engine is not garbage, as has been stated thousands of times here. I all comes down to who maintained it.

Just have to be smart with my asset management, no need looking like a big shot in an 04 Lariat that might only have 10 years left when I can get into a new XL
