Default Need transmission

I have a F-150 XLT 5.4L year 2000. AAmaco says that my tranny is neutrlizing meaning that it wants to lock! I don't want to buy a used tranny. I prefer a rebuilt, my own hopefully. What do you guys suggest? AAmaco wants $900 to pull it down and take it apart then they will tell me what parts I need with no further labor charge. But how much will the parts be? They can not say until they see what needs to be changed. What should I do? What is a good price? Should I just go for someone elses rebuilt? Please help and "NO" I can not afford a new truck! I live in NYC.

When I put my foot on the accelerator the truck hesitates a bit not every time but 90% of the time. This has been going on for quite sometime. I call it "slipping" but they said after a drive test that it was trying to neutralize. So now I am exploring the world of transmissions. I know they have "used" "rebuilts" and "new" and they probably do not have new ones for my year. I am at a lost! My money is very limited. I have about $2,000 so far and I need my truck for work.

No. I use to have trouble in the cold weather. The truck would sound like it wanted to cut off, stall out. So what I did was heat it up and really rev the engine. It would pop and pop then and now everything is fine! That seems to do the trick. I have over 210K miles on it. I did have the engine checked and they said I had a bad spark plug but I figure that is the least of my woes. The idle is really fine now.

A miss can cause hesitation when accelerating my 00 had a bad coil or 2 and when I took off it would kinda hesitate and slightly jump a little then come out of it then at random it'd do it again

Yeah the Autozone guy said I had a bad plug and needed a new wire set BUT then why would the guy from AAmaco test drive it and say that it was trying to lock?

ok I'm going to have the plugs changed and get a new wire set. The mechanic up the street from me said he would do it for $80 which sounded fine to me. I will have him check the timing belt or whatever that is also. Thank you so much for your help. I will have this done in a day or two and get back to you here.
