It depends on the rear diff. I have a 97 f150 with a 4.2. The rear diff is geared wrong so it constantly downshifts. I pull aprox 5000 lbs. It works but it it doesn't do it well. I do have 275,000 on the engine and it hasn't caved yet.

I have a 97 with a 4.2 that we got new and now has 192000 miles on it weve never had any big problems with the truck towing its rated at 6200 with the right set up but if your carfull you can pull more its really an issue of how much gas you can afford ive had people tell me that the v8's will stop better but youve got the same brakes as them so i dont see why. i saw where someone had said dont pull in over drive and you really shouldnt ford gave you the option to turn overdrive off for a reason. but the 4.2's will pull alot better than alot of people think just dont try runnin over the speed limit that aint safe no matter what you drive especially if youve got a load behind ya

a buddy of mine has a 97 f150 with the 4.2 5 spd trans (not sure which rear end) and he pulled his 763 Bobcat on a drag using his stock bumper hitch and no trailer brakes. around here its all hills, too
