Cap Phaser is the part I was thinking of. There is a GREAT post on here with a link to vids of normal engine noise... Try to see if you can find it.

Mine made a very slight tick for about two weeks before it spit out a spark plug. I don't think threre's anything you can do, threads are already damaged and leaking. Just don't be surprised when you lose a cylinder. Helicoli the hole and get someone to clean the aluminum out.

i took the cap off where the spark plug was and then damn thing was shattered in there. The porcelain around the spark plug was in pieces and when I finally got the spark plug out, the bottom metal sleeve (what the spark lug ignites to) was still down in the engine bay.

I took the truck to my local ford dealership and they said this is a common problem with the triton V8.. Its still there right now and not sure how much its gonna cost to fix or if the warranty will even still cover it. I will try and keep you posted.
I hope this doesnt happen to anyone else.
Did your noise sound like it was coming from underneath?

Underneath what? My ticking noise stemmed from the broken spark plug. So if you are referring to under, then hood then yes...

the top end will tick before it spits a plug due to air escaping around the plug. I just fixed a blown plug and I have a tick still. I hope it's just the injectors.

This is the early production 2008. I have the later production. You can by a extraction tool for the spark plug metal casing that is stuck for about $12 takes minutes to do. Dealerships do do anything without making dollars lots of dollars, probably stalling to find a reason to sock you with a bill that should cost you about $50.

Default Ticking Noise prone to 5.4 and 4.6 Ford Motors

Changing oil works, when this problem first starts. In fact works for a while and Ford knows it. They even tell you it is an oil pressure problem and to go to a different oil, we went to Ford oil and filter, did not really make a change in the long run. In fact unless you plan on changing oil every 1000 miles, the oil change fix wont work. and it is not the root of the problem so your treating a symptom not the problem. The problem lies in the Cam Phasers. This will get worse, find a reputable mechanic and the fix is about $1200. A dealership will probably just tell you it is something else until they are not liable for the bill and then charge you lots of dollars for a fix. Spend the extra money and do the timing chains at the same time, extra $300.
