Default Fresh/Cold Air Intakes

Now we are rolling; I got a response on my exhaust post!

I am looking at the various intake systems and they all appear to pull air from the engine compartment. The only system I have seen so far that appears to be a true FAI is the Banks system but they only show systems for the BIG trucks, nothing for a 2003 4.L Expedition.

I suppose if the air filters mate up with the opening in the wheel well and the fit is tight, there is some fresh air coming in but, based on filter surface area, most of the air appears to be from the engine compartment.

Right? Wrong? What say you?

most intakes come with a heat shield to keep engine heat away

captain,
you know what they say about pictures; photos would be great and appreciated.

thirteen,
heat shield or no, if the filter is in the engine compartment, that is where the air is coming from. Maybe it's just me but that doesn't really qualify as fresh air and certainly isn't cold air intake. The fender well opening is the only source of fresh air and it would have to be pulled in from the small end of the conical shaped filter. Like I said, using surface area, that is probably about 10% of the intake air volume??

It is what it is but it may not be what it is called; I call it an open air box. Call me **** but maybe I am missing something? Maybe the sealed units are the way to go?

the intake has plenty of fresh air coming from below via the wheel well. the main benefit from a cai is that air flows through it better then air flows through the stock intake. cold air is good but the main hp comes from making it easier for the motor to breathe

Open air box; I will buy that hypothesis; works on my Harleys. Better flowing air cleaner/filter and exhaust is good for an easy 10HP from 88 cubic inches.
