Need serious advice on 'check gauge' problem
Hey guys
First off I have a 2004 f150 supercab 4.6 with about 200k on it.
So my girlfriend was driving my truck today and going up a steep hill, the check gauge popped up and beeped.
The temp gauge went to hot and stayed there for a couple secs , engine light stayed on for good, and the truck was "sputtering" and had only a little bit of power.
She pulled over and let it sit for a couple minutes, then started it and was able to get over the hill.
I jumped in and noticed on another hill the temp gauge shot up all the way and beeped but didn't sputter so I parked it.
This is my only vehicle at the moment so any quick replies are greatly appreciated.
Anyone have any advice on what to look for to find the culprit?
And if you have any advice on something it could be, if possible let me know what the signs are or how to test the questioned part(s).
Thanks fellas and like I said any quick replies are great so I can try to figure this out asap.

Sorry for the late reply. thanks guys.
so i ended up flushing it after work first and test drove it around then up a steep hill around my house and it went away and hasnt given me any indication that the problem is still there so i think that did the trick. now off to swap my door panels and windows!
