Some good folks here @150 forum told me about http://www.troyerperformance.com/ . At there site they have electric fans and and underdrive pulleys that should save fuel. Fans will really work if city driving. They offer a discount on superchips for 150forum users. Hopeing they offer a discount on there stage1 or 2 performace packages.

I saw a mythbusters episode where they did the tail gate down myth. And when you have the tail gate up it creates a circular air flow in the bed from front to back and creates a cusion of air going from the top of the cab to the top of the tail gate and makes it mor aero dynamic. If you don't have that like if you hade the tail gate down then the air does not have that circular flow and it actualy creates presure that pulls on the truck.

Regarding the Royal Purple Synthetic Oil; I went to their site and left somewhat confused as to which oil some of you are using. Are you using High Performance Street or Racing oil?
Can you find this oil in auto parts stores or do you have to special order it?

Improved fuel economy for 2010 4.6L-3V 4x4
I used a Pennzoil full synthetic (either Platinum or Ultra) in my 2010 4.6L-3V F150 4x4 . My fuel economy jumped from an average of 17.5 to 18.5 to an average of 19 to 20 mpg. However, this was accommodated by four other factors, so it's not clear it was just the oil: 1) the dealership wasn't changing the air filter during oil changes. The filter was black, heavily deposited with PCV, black oxidized oil deposits. The air filter was changed during the oil change. 2) The oil filter the dealership was using was not a Motocraft filter (it was a Valvoline or some other off-brand-- I purchased a Motocraft filter, the large size, the dealership used the small version); 3) Weather became a bit warmer, i.e. more days between 40-60 deg vs. 30 to 50 deg.
I cannot prove conclusively the synthetic oil was the reason for the jump in fuel economy. however, what I really want to do for future oil changes are as follows:
1) Use a quality full synthetic oil (Pennzoil worked, but I'm sure Mobil 1, the Ford full synthetic are similar in friction modifiers and anti-oxidants, the stuff that makes synthetic oils what they are)
2) Always change the air filter (it's a lot cheaper than paying for lost fuel economy at $4.00 / gal)
3) Always use Moto-craft oil filters unless someone else out there has a better one. Don't know why the dealership used the small filter, the bigger one looked like it had more capacity.
4) keep tires about 2-3 psig above the recommended inflation pressure.
5) Continue to drive in fuel economy mode vs. gorilla performance mode. Makes a huge difference. Keeping highway speeds between 68-72 vs. 75-78 makes a huge difference.
Just some thoughts. Anyone else have anything? It's really great to be getting between 19.3 to 20.4 mpg with a V8 for MH fuel economy.
Also, someone made a comment on a cover. I have a vinyl cover, and I'm a mechanical engineer also. I think it improves the aerodynamics of the vehicle and reduces drag without a significant weight increase like the fiberglass or other solid covers. It also rolls up when you have to carry a load that extends above the bed height without having to remove the cover and store it somewhere.

At $3.50/gallon, what suggestions can you make to improve fool economy? Besides, parking my F150 and riding my bike, I was thinking of putting a cat-back exhaust system on the truck and perhaps an aftermarket intake. However, I enjoy the quietness of the cab. Is there a performance exhaust that will give the 4.6 a performance boost without turning it into a Hog?

Well, get the skinniest, least aggressive tread tire you can get away with. I know you all don't want to hear that but.....
My 3.7L seems to get a mileage improvement with premium. Not enough to justify the extra expense, but better. Latest tank is premium no-ethanol. It looks like I'll be hitting just under 20 mpg in city only driving.

F150 Fuel Economy
1st what model year and powertrain do you own? I have a 2010 4.6L-3V with the lowest axle ratio offered (forgot which one).
I've found that replacing air filter along with the oil change and filter helps, whether it needs it or not (air filter). One time it was replaced and very black for some reason.
I thought fully synthetic oil helped, but the normal semi-synthetic oil the dealer used seems to deliver the same fuel economy. I keep the tires pumped to 37-38 psi, even though the door sticker calls for 35 psi.
Careful how you drive, avoid gorilla accelerations, try to keep the vehicle 70 mph or lower. Try to time the lights or avoid roads with a lot of stop and go. On the weekends drive your wife's car that doesn't burn so much fuel just running the occasional errands.
I typically get between 19.0 to 20 mpg by doing this with a V8 in an Club Cab F150. I wish I had purchased a V6, I really do not need a V8 for what I'm hauling, i.e. myself, a broom and an occasional load of mulch and top soil.

I have a 2011 4x4 Screw with the 5.0. I have checked this several times and have found conclusively that Ethanol free Premium will give me about 2-2.5 MPG better mileage than 87 octane E-10. A two MPG increase is about equivalent to a .40 gal. price difference in my truck.

Aggressive driving like rapid acceleration, braking everytime and speeding wastes fuel, so i think everyone have to keep these things in mind to save more fuel and even sensible driving is safer for everyone
